Dr. Rothenberg is a renowned psychiatrist who is best known for his work regarding the long-term research on the creative process in literature, art, science, and psychotherapy. During his career, he has practiced clinical psychiatry and has served as an administrator and a therapist at Yale Psychiatric Institute in New Haven, Connecticut, the John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, Connecticut, and the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Further, he found success in a private psychiatric outpatient practice setting in Chatham, New York. Dr. Rothenberg's long and distinguished career also included a faculty position at Yale University School of Medicine after completing his residency work. While at Yale, he was notably responsible for researching and being awarded two successive, five-year Research Career Investigator grants and the Guggenheim Foundation Award for one year.
In addition to teaching at Yale University, Dr. Rothenberg taught psychiatry courses at the University of Connecticut, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Capetown Medical School, Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris and full time at Harvard University. During his tenure at Harvard, Dr. Rothenberg became a Fellow on two separate years at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He was also a Fellow for one year at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
A U.S. Army veteran, Dr. Rothenberg served on completion of his residency work in the Medical Corps and chief psychiatrist for all military personnel in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean between 1961 and 1963. He later returned to Yale Medical School where he spent another 20 years. As a result of his studies, he has contributed multiple articles to scholarly and professional journals and has served on various distinguished editorial boards for psychiatric journals. He has authored and co-authored approximately a dozen books, including "Index of Scientific Writings on Creativity," "Creative Men and Women" with B. Greenberg in 1974, "The Emerging Goddess: The Creative Process in Art, Science, and Other Fields" in 1979, "Adolescence: Psychopathology, Normality and Creativity" in 1990, "The Creative Process of Psychotherapy: in 1988, Creativity and Madness: New Findings and Old Stereotypes" in 1993 and "Flight from Wonder: An Investigation of Scientific Creativity" in 2016. Further, Dr. Rothenberg authored two novels, "Living Color" in 2001 and "Madness and Glory" in 2012.
Dr. Rothenberg received a Bachelor of Arts in social relations at the preeminent Harvard University in 1952. He later acquired a Doctor of Medicine at Tufts University in 1956, at which he was awarded the annual Dermatology Prize and Medical Alumni Award. Additional educational pursuits included an internship at Pennsylvania Hospital, a residency in psychiatry at Yale University VA Hospital, Grace-New Haven Hospital and Yale Psychiatric Institute. Board certified in psychiatry and neurology, Dr. Rothenberg served as the Chief Psychiatry Resident while at Yale.
As Principal Investigator of the project "Studies in the Creative Process," Dr. Rothenberg has conducted extensive controlled research on the creative process and additionally on bipolar disorder, aggression, anorexia nervosa, and adolescence, hospital schooling, and psychotherapy. He accomplished the researching of 45 Nobel laureates in the sciences and determinded, as he had previously with outstanding literary and artistic subjects, their specific cognitive modes of creative thought and discovery. Honored with several awards and fellowships, Dr. Rothenberg is also a celebrated Marquis listee. He has been featured in over 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
Dr. Rothenberg is a distinguished life member and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Likewise, he is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society, the American Society of Aesthetics and Sigma Xi.
