PUEBLO, CO, September 24, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John Johnson has received the 2020 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award (after being listed in Who's Who for 20 or more consecutive years with more than 30 years in field, having been published in two articles highlighting expertise and having received at least one award outside Marquis Who's Who). Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After attending the University of Southern Colorado (now Colorado State University-Pueblo), he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree summa cum laude at the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York and his Master of Fine Arts Degree at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. While at RIT Mr. Johnson did an independent study at the George Eastman Museum and he attended a Friends of Photography workshop in Carmel, California with photographers Ansel Adams and Brett Weston. Over 45 years, Mr. Johnson has accrued experience in photography, film and teaching. Among the institutions he has taught include: Colorado State University-Pueblo (where he still teaches Art History courses on-line); University of Colorado Denver; Learning Tree University Chatsworth, California; Colorado Institute of Art Denver; Colorado Film School Denver; Pueblo Community College; Community College of Aurora; Red Rocks Community College Lakewood, Colorado; Pikes Peak Community College Colorado Springs, Colorado; Arapahoe Community College Littleton, Colorado; Community College of Denver and Cranbrook Academy of Art. While teaching and working in Los Angeles, Mr. Johnson attended Robert McKee's Story Structure Class at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood, California.
Professionally, as founder and president of Tamarack Productions, Inc. since 1982, he has directed, photographed, written or produced award-winning films including the documentaries "Damon Runyon's Pueblo", "Zebulon Pike and The Blue Mountain", and the feature "Curse of the Blue Lights" with RUNYON initially being distributed by Encyclopaedia Britannica. The RUNYON and PIKE films were both awarded the CINE Golden Eagle award in Washington, DC, allowing them to represent the United States in international film competitions and both were shown on Rocky Mountain PBS. Also, PIKE was awarded the Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History in Oakland, California. RUNYON was shown at the Denver International Film Festival, while his BLUE LIGHTS was an invited feature to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Film Festival, Rome. All of Mr. Johnson's films to date have dealt with or included elements from local Southern Colorado history.
Fascinated since childhood with photography and film, Mr. Johnson practiced his craft while still in high school beginning in the 1960's as a professional photographer, later as a Colorado State photographer on the Eisenhower Tunnel, as a Pueblo Star Journal & Chieftain newspaper photographer, as a KOAA-TV floor director/cameraman, as a filmmaker for a USC Humanities film series and as a production assistant on numerous national productions.
Additionally, his fine art photographs and writings have been represented in a number of books including: Focal Encyclopedia of Photography; View Camera Technique; Photographic Materials and Processes; Visual Concepts for Photographers; Orlin Helgoe-Shaman of the Prairie, and in the Southwest Fine Arts Biennial Catalogue from the Museum of New Mexico among others.
An avid genealogist, Mr. Johnson has contributed to various works regarding his ancestors, namely "The Descendants of Peter Brakebill, 1760-1844: A soldier in the American Revolution" and "Edward Tuck 1730-1781 of Halifax Co VA." Mr. Johnson's personal history: he was born October 31, 1951, Pueblo, as the son of William Admiral "Buddy" Johnson and Matilda Marie (Trabucco). Mr. Johnson, married Nadine Sue Milosavich August 24, 1974 and they have two children Rebecca Sue "Becky" (Johnson) Stark and Thomas William Johnson.
His fine art photographs have been in numerous exhibitions including: Cranbrook Academy, MI; RIT, NY; Sangre de Cristo Art Center, Pueblo; Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe; Denver Art Museum; Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; University of South Carolina, Sumter; Texas Tech University, Lubbock; Scarab Club, Detroit; Chester County Art Association, PA; Washington Gallery of Photography, MD; and in many Colorado shows. His work is handled exclusively at the John Deaux Art Gallery, Pueblo.
Mr. Johnson has been celebrated throughout the years for his professional excellence. From 1973 to 1977, he earned grants from the Thatcher Foundation, RIT/Professional Photographers of America, and the Cranbrook/Ford Foundation. Subsequently, he obtained additional grants from the Jackson Foundation, the National Endowment of the Humanities/Colorado Humanities Program and the University of Southern Colorado. In 2006, he was honored with an Excellence in Arts Award from the Pueblo Arts Council.
Looking towards the future, Mr. Johnson is currently at work on a book about his father entitled "Buddy Johnson - A Colorado Original" who for over four decades was involved in Colorado's music, early radio and television and about whom he created the website buddyjohnson.net.
