Mr. Lawit has been the founder and senior attorney at John W. Lawit LLC since 1979. During his tenure, he was also licensed as a foreign legal consultant by the Law Society of British Columbia from 2009 until 2012, as well as an adjunct professor of immigration and nationality law at Texas Tech University Law School and the University of New Mexico Law School.
Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Mr. Lawit has been a volunteer attorney at the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas in Dallas since 2013 and was a founder of the Immigration Law Section of the Dallas Bar Association in 2015. Earlier in his career, he established an immigration program on behalf of Jewish Family Services of Albuquerque, was a director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico and a volunteer attorney with the Arab-American Defense Committee. Notably, Mr. Lawit served as the president of the New Mexico Refugee Association for five years.
Mr. Lawit received his law degree from the University of New Hampshire School of Law in 1977. The State Bars of New Mexico and Texas license him to practice law. A contributor of articles to professional journals, Mr. Lawit also authored the New Mexico Immigration and Nationality Law Practice Act in 1987 and was selected as a United States immigration judge by the United States Department of Justice in 1985.
Mr. Lawit has been a member of the Dallas Bar Association since 2013 and the Immigration and Nationality Law Section of the State Bar of Texas since 2008. Mr. Lawit is the former chair of the Immigration and International Law Section of the State bar of New Mexico, as well as national co-chair of the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Lawit has held an AV Rating through Martindale-Hubbell since 2000 and was recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in Texas from 2015 until today. Named one of the Top Attorneys in New Mexico by Arizona Magazine from 2012 to 2013, he also received a Millennium Friend of Children Award from Rainbow House International, the Jean Marshall Stolet Award from the Jewish Family Services of Albuquerque, and the Distinguished Service Award in Immigration Law from the Catholic Social Services of Albuquerque. He was also named Volunteer of the Year by the Jewish Family Services of Albuquerque and an Honorary Consulting Attorney by the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs. Likewise, Mr. Lawit was highlighted in the 14th edition of Who's Who in the World and several editions of Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in America.
