Mark J. Dannels was the first sheriff in United States history to be appointed to the Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council
BISBEE, AZ, September 27, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mark J. Dannels has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. A respected and appreciated member of his community, Mr. Dannels has protected and served Cochise County, Arizona, for more than 30 years. He was an officer with the Bisbee Police Department from 1984 to 1986, and then served as deputy sheriff to deputy commander over the patrol division in the Cochise County Sheriff's Office. Upon his retirement in 2008 he assumed the role of police chief for the Coquille Police Department in Oregon, a position he held for three years. In 2012, he was elected sheriff of the Cochise County Sheriff's Office in Arizona. He was named Deputy of the Year and Western Sheriff of the Year, and was inducted into the National Police Hall of Fame in Titusville, Florida.
The distinguished sheriff grew up in a rural farm community in Northern Illinois, and after high school, Mr. Dannels joined the military. He was stationed at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Arizona, before being discharged in 1984, commencing his law enforcement career. Excelling with the United States Army, Mr. Dannels was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Medal of Valor and the Distinguished Service Award.
Later in his life and career, Mr. Dannels went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in administration from Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, Alabama, and then a Master of Arts in criminal justice management from Aspen University in Denver in 2011. He was also granted a public manager certification by Arizona State University. Mr. Dannels' education inspired him to pursue some career-related endeavors in teaching. He was a teacher in organizational leadership and team building at Cochise College in Sierra Vista, Arizona, and a teacher at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas.
Mr. Dannels' passion for law enforcement is visible through his priorities for his community's quality of life: education, prevention and enforcement. Mr. Dannels was the first sheriff in United States history to be appointed to the Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council, and he is the chairman of the National Sheriff's Association for Border Security. Cochise County sits on the Unites States and Mexico border; therefore, this cause is pertinent to his community. Mr. Dannels is also a member and former president of the Arizona Sheriff's Association and the National Sheriff Association.
Alongside his additional civic duties, Mr. Dannels is the president of Just Kids Incorporated, a foundation created and maintained by the San Pedro Kiwanis Club, of which Mr. Dannels was the former president. He is president of the local chapter of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association for Children, and is a former president of the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club.
