Dr. Schieken is renowned as a Professor of Pediatrics with more than 50 years of specialization in pediatric cardiology. He initially pursued an education at LaSalle University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1961. He concluded his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1965. From 1965 to 1968, he completed a residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He was a Registrar at The Hospital for Sick Children, London, UK from 1967 to 1968. In 1998, Dr. Schieken obtained a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration with distinction at Virginia Commonwealth University.
From 1968 to 1970, Dr. Schieken began his career as a Fellow in Pediatric Cardiology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He worked as an Assistant Instructor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine from 1971 to 1973. He found success with the University of Iowa from 1973 to 1982 as a Professor of Pediatrics and also Preventive Medicine. Dr. Schieken has flourished with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Professor of Human Genetics from 1982 to 2002 and as a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics since 1982.
Dr. Schieken served as the Chairman of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Study Section of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1970 to 1973, work he considers to be a career highlight. He is honored to work in pediatric cardiology and to have contributed to the body of research available for the specialty. He has over 100 published works. Dr. Schieken is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and was Chairman of the Committee of Preventive Cardiology. As a Fellow of the American Heart Association, he was a member of the Epidemiology Council and the Council of Cardiovascular Disease in Children. For ten years, he was a member of the Association of European Pediatric Cardiology.
Honors include the Gold Barnwell Medal from Central High School in Philadelphia, U.S. Army Commendation Medal, AED Premedical Honor Society (1960-1961), 1961 President, Alpha Omega Alpha, Medical Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Honor Society and Teacher of the Year (Pediatrics, 2003).
