He was also a Director, then President, then Vice-Chairman of Oak Technology between the years 1987 to 2003. He served as Chairman of GSI Group from 2000 to 2010. He was General Partner of two technology venture capital partnerships, KBA Partners LP and OpNET Partners, LP from 1983 and 2001. During his career, he has been Director of 21 technology companies and a total of 31 companies (11 public companies). He is currently a Director of Applied Optoelectrics, Inc. and TREX Enterprises, Inc.
Mr. Black began his career as an employee for Vulcan Materials Co. from 1958 until 1962. He progressed to work as the vice president of finance for Warner Electric Brake & Clutch Co. from 1962 to 1967. He would later return to the company as a director between 1973 and 1985. He contributed to the Maremount Corp. in the progressively responsible positions of a president, a chief operating officer, and a chief executive officer from 1967 to 1979. Additionally, Mr. Black held the posts of the president, the chief executive officer, and the director of Alusuisse of America, Inc. and AM International, Inc. between 1979 and 1982.
Prior to his professional achievements, Mr. Black pursued an education in engineering at the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1954. He attended Harvard University, from which he graduated with a Master of Business Administration in 1958. Moreover, Mr. Black received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Beloit College in 1997.
A highly respected member in his field, Dr. Black is the author of "Linear Polyethylene-Propylene: Problems and Opportunities," published in 1958. Notably, he completed active duty service in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1956 and served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1956 to 1962. An active member of the American Alpine Club, Mr. Black was the recipient of the Flame of Hope Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Indian College Fund, and the Inroads Lifetime Achievement Award.
