MADRID, SPAIN, September 30, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Juan Manuel Martín-Sánchez with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Martín-Sánchez celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Professor Juan Manuel Martín-Sánchez patented the methodologies of Predictive Control and Adaptive Predictive Control (1976), Optimized Adaptive Control (1980) and Adaptive Predictive Expert (ADEX) Control (2003), all of them well known process control techniques in the scientific community and industry. Also, he led their technological development and application in industry as commercial products.
He obtained the title of Industrial Engineer in 1970, and Doctor Industrial Engineer in 1974, both from the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (UPC). From 1971 to 1976, his research activities were continued at Grenoble and Toulouse Universities in France, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in the United States, and the University of Alberta (U of A) in Canada.
In 1976, he filed the first patent for Predictive and Adaptive Predictive control (APC) and his paper "A New Solution to Adaptive Control" presented the first proof of stability for APC. This paper was granted cover honors in a Special Issue of Proceedings of the IEEE dedicated to Adaptive Systems.
After 42 years, his paper "Optimized Adaptive Control for the MYRRHA Linear Accelerator" has also deserved cover honors in the 2018 April issue of the IEEE Control Systems Magazine. This paper illustrates the application of ADEX methodology to the proton accelerator of MYRRHA, a transmutation reactor promoted by the European Commission (EC) and conceived to solve the nuclear waste problem.
From 1981 to 1986, he was a Professor at the University of Alberta (U of A) and a Research Fellow of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada. During this period, he successfully applied APC to several pilot plants at the U of A and to the first industrial process, a bleach plant in British Columbia. Also, he developed the Stability Theory for Predictive control and APC, which was the subject of several papers in leading journals and later was published in several books, Prentice Hall (1996), UNED (2003) and Springer (2015).
In 1986, he founded in Spain the company SCAP Europa which developed a DCS (Distributed Control System, hardware + software) based on APC and carried out more than 150 industrial applications of it until 1998. In 2004, he founded the company Adaptive Predictive Expert Control ADEX S.A. (ADEX SA) with a different entrepreneurial perspective. ADEX SA is a software company that uses the Self-Tuning Artificial Intelligence (ST-AI) provided by the Adaptive Predictive Expert (ADEX) control methodology to develop and implement ADEX ST-AI Systems for the optimized adaptive control of mission critical processes in industry.
ADEX systems provide stability and optimal performance to industrial plants, in areas such as energy, composites materials, chemical and petrochemical, cement, water, aerospace, environment and climatization, overcoming the so-called Control Problem, i.e. a gap between control theory and practice extant for decades in the industrial field. Also, ADEX SA participates in outstanding R+D projects funded by the EC.
He has authored more than 100 publications, has given plenary sessions at international conferences, seminars and congresses, and has been a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Control. He has been a professor at the UPC, the U of A and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. In addition to his role as President at ADEX SA, he is currently a full professor at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid (Open University of Spain). Between January 2004 and January 2009, he has been President of the IEEE Joint Spanish Chapter of the Industrial Applications Society (IAS) and the Control Systems Society (CCS). Under his Presidency, the Chapter organized two international Seminars on Advanced Industrial Control Applications (SAICA). In 2009, he was elevated to the grade of IEEE Fellow for his "Contributions to the Adaptive Predictive Control methodologies". During 2010 and 2011 was Distinguished Lecturer and later Prominent Lecturer of IEEE.
He was Guest Editor of a Special Issue on "Industrial Optimized Adaptive Control" published by The Inter. J. of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing in October 2012. In 2015, Springer has published his latest book "ADEX Optimized Adaptive Controllers and Systems: From Research to industrial Practice". This book provides the theory and industrial practice for the application of a generic multivariable, adaptive and stable process control solution to achieve optimized control performance despite changes in process dynamics and their context of operation. It is the result of more than four decades of research and development work by the authors and their collaborators.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Martín-Sánchez has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
