Dr. Mickel, a historian and professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, taught in the department of history for 42 years. Hired in 1961 as an assistant professor, he worked his way up to full professor by 1970 and since chaired the department for 10 years. He also spent one year as interim dean in the School of Graduate Studies, was the founding director of the University Honors Program for 20 years, which received national recognition, and served as the coordinator of the Network for Excellence in Teaching on campus for 10 years between 1993 and 2003.
The co-founder of the Wisconsin Association for the Promotion of History, Dr. Mickel founded and served as president of the Wisconsin Collegiate Honors Council for three years as well. He is a co-founder, past president and current longtime board of directors member of the Wisconsin Association for the Promotion of History and past two-time president, past vice president and current longtime board of governors of the Upper Midwest Honors Council. Furthermore, Dr. Mickel is a longtime member of multiple other organizations, including the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the American Studies Association, the Agricultural History Society and the Immigration and Ethnic History Society.
In more recent years, Dr. Mickel became active on the local level. He served on the board of directors of the Eau Claire Historic Preservation Foundation between 2004 and 2013 and the Chippewa Valley Museum between 2006 and 2015. Named Outstanding University Student in History by Wayne State University in 1961, Dr. Mickel later received a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship from 1976 to 1977. He has been included in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
Dr. Mickel received a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, as valedictorian of his class from Eastern Nazarene College in 1957, followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Wayne State University in 1958 and 1961, respectively. He later completed postdoctoral coursework at the University of California, Berkeley, between 1966 and 1967.
Born in Alum Bank, PA, Dr. Mickel later married his wife Jane Marie Pederson. He has one daughter and two grandsons. Enjoying his retirement, he enjoys biking, reading, gardening and gourmet cooking. He also likes to travel.
