Founded in 2013, the volunteer charity is building a record of market and social research across the United Kingdom with an objective of collecting research-based material that is then made available to those seeking to explore the evolution of people's behaviors, attitudes, and lives. In particular, the research is utilized by educators, students, marketing consultants, and industry associations.
A well-known expert in observing the behavior of human beings and measuring attitudes of the population, Dr. Nelson began her career as a research psychologist with Mars Ltd., in London in 1954. She later worked in market research and notably co-founded Taylor Nelson/Sofres PLC (TNS) in London between 1965 and 1992. Dr. Nelson subsequently contributed for several years as the chief executive of The Princess Royal Trust for Careers in London. She also chaired the council for the University of Roehampton and the South West London Community NHS Trust.
Dr. Nelson remains active on the advisory board for Fly Research, the fastest panel research agency in the UK. She is also a member of the advisory committee on degree awarding powers for the Quality Assurance Agency. She formerly provided her expertise as the chief executive officer of the Chronic Granulomatous Disorder Research Trust, the director of Bright Talk Ltd., a council member for City & Guilds, the chairman of the UK Ecolabelling board, the vice-chair of the Open University, and a non-executive director for Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburg. Further, Dr. Nelson acted as president of the World Association for Public Opinion Research, an international professional association of researchers in the fields of communication and survey research, between 1990 and 1992. Involved with a broad range of civic organizations, Dr. Nelson recently contributed her time as a trustee for Jeans for Genes during 2006, an organization which raises funds to support children affected by genetic disorders.
An alumnus of Middlebury College, Dr. Nelson received a Bachelor of Arts in 1951, after which she attended the University of London where she acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in 1953. She received an Honorary Doctor of Science at City London University in 1993 and Honorary Doctor of Philosophy at Open University in 2003. A fellow of the Market Research Society and the Royal Society of the Arts, Dr. Nelson is also a member of the Freedom City of London and the First Forum of the U.K. and is a member and former board member of the International Women's Forum.
Honored with several awards during her illustrious career, Dr. Nelson is most proud of receiving the First Women's Award from Lloyd Bank in 2011, which celebrates women in business. She has also been decorated by the Order of the British Empire.
