She previously found success as the president of the Texas A&M Health Science Center and the vice chancellor of health affairs for the Texas A&M University System from 2002 to 2012. Dr. Dickey began her career as a resident in family medicine at the Memorial Hospital System in Houston, Texas in 1976.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Dickey pursued an education at the Stephen F. Austin State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts. She completed postgraduate study at the University of Texas at Houston, from which she graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 1976. Moreover, Dr. Dickey is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine.
Outside of her immediate professional responsibilities, Dr. Dickey contributes her time and skill as a reviewer for the Journal of the American Medical Association, an editorial advisory board member for Patient Care and Medical World News, and as a founding editor for the Journal of Patient Safety. Notably, she was elected into the National Academy of Medicine and the Texas' Women's Hall of Fame. Dr. Dickey has received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Texas at Houston and in 1995 she elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2007. Furthermore, Dr. Dickey is an active member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians.
