With more than 45 years of professional experience, Ms. Richards has been an instructor of medical-surgical nursing at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Jefferson Davis Campus since 1972. In 1980, she received the Instructor of the Year Award for that campus. Prior to her teaching position, she was a staff nurse at Charity Hospital in New Orleans on the L.S. U Female Surgery Unit and in the Intensive Care Unit at Howard Memorial Hospital in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Before embarking on her career, Ms. Richards first pursed an education with Louisiana State University, School of Nursing where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She later continued her studies at Texas Woman's University in Dallas, Texas, earning a Master of Science with emphasis in medical-surgical nursing and role of clinical nurse specialist in 1981. Ms. Richards has been a board certified registered nurse in medical-surgical nursing through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Ms. Richards has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. She has been a member of American Association of Critical Care Nurses, American Nurses Association, Mississippi Nurses Association serving as their District #S president for two years. In conjunction with the American Heart Association, she was Mississippi Regional Faculty and established the first Community Training Center within the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to teach C.P.R. and Advanced Cardiac Life Support for physicians, nurses and first responders. In light of all her accomplishments, Ms. Richards has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in American Nursing and Who's Who of American Women.
