Dr. Sharfman is a consulting strategist and principal of Sharfman & Co in New York City. Established in 1985, his client service practice includes interviewing and coaching, as well as problem-solving for positive outcome, response, and differentiation, in organization, planning, marketing, communication, quality, innovation, branding, and identity. Prior to establishment as a consulting strategist, Dr. Sharfman spent multiple years as senior vice president–strategic planning for J. Walter Thompson U.S.A., a worldwide advertising/communications agency headquartered in New York City, and senior vice president–strategic planning for JWT's Corporate Communications Division. He was director of judging for the Automotive News PACE Awards for automotive innovation from inception in 1994 until 2009. He was vice president–marketing for Metagraphic Systems, a start-up in New York City, and has been a college classroom teacher, teaching writing, literature, and art history, variously, at Columbia College and Columbia University, and as vice chairman of the English Department at Idaho State University (1970–1972). He has been a jazz musician and motorcycle road-racer.
A contributing writer for Automobile Magazine from 1986 until 2001 and for Las Vegas Life, Dr. Sharfman also authored articles in various professional journals and contributed a chapter in the book "A Time to Stir: Columbia 1968." He has written in the fields of literary criticism, art history, the automotive industry, science, and other areas. Dr. Sharfman has been a studio regular with The Auto Lab, a radio broadcast in New York City, since 2005.
Dr. Sharfman received a Bachelor of Arts with honors at the University of Michigan in 1964. Subsequently attending Columbia University, he received a Master of Arts in 1965 and Ph.D. in 1969.
A life member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association and Columbia University Alumni Association, Dr. Sharfman is also a member of the Authors Guild and the National Writers Union. He is currently a board member of the International Motor Press Association, and was awarded a Recognition of Excellence in International Automotive Media in 1999. A motorcycle and car enthusiast, Dr. Sharfman served as a judge for the Greenwich Concours from 1999 until 2015. In his free time, Dr. Sharfman remains active in support of various political, environmental, and conservation causes.
Dr. Sharfman is also a celebrated Marquis listee. He has been cited in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
