Dr. Irvin Heimburger was born in Tsinan, China to medical missionary parents. His father was a physician, and his mother a nurse. Two of Irvin's five siblings also went into the medical field as physicians – one brother, Robert, in neurosurgery, another Richard, in plastic surgery. All three Heimburger brothers received their medical degrees from Vanderbilt University. Irvin graduated with a bachelor's degree from Drury College in Springfield, MO in 1953. He then earned his medical degree in 1957 and completed an internship at Vanderbilt in Nashville. Dr. Heimburger's surgical residency was served under Dr. Harris B. Shumacker in Indianapolis, IN at Indiana University. Upon completion, he accepted a thoracic fellowship at Leeds University Hospital in Leeds, England. In 1966, Dr. Heimburger joined Evansville Surgical Associates in Evansville, IN.
Dr. Heimburger is a board certified thoracic surgeon. Throughout his career, he conducted extensive research and contributed multiple articles to peer reviewed journals. During Irvin's 32 years of private practice in Evansville, IN he served terms as staff president for both St. Mary's and Deaconess Hospitals. He also served as president for the Vanderburg County Medical Society, and the American College of Surgeons, Indiana Chapter. Other professional memberships for Dr. Heimburger include Central Surgical Association, International Cardiovascular Society, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and Midwest Surgical Society.
Since retiring in 1998, he pursued his interest in philately, which is the study of stamps and postal history. He has participated in national and international exhibitions, and in 2008, Irvin earned the coveted "Champion of Champions" at the 41st World Series of Philately.
Irvin and his wife, Marcia, are the parents of Angela, Jeffrey, Christian Heimburger and Jenny Heimburger Henneberger. They are grandparents to Jake, Julia, and Kelly Heimburger and Charlie, Peter, Douglas, and Gideon Henneberger.
