Having accrued more than 30 years of experience in religious education to his credit, Dr. Moessner has become an authority in his profession and has been recognized as an honorary faculty associate of New Testament and theology at the Universities of Pretoria, SA (2008--) and Radboud, Nijmegen, NL (2010--). Previously, he excelled as an instructor of biblical studies at Louisiana State University from 1982 to 1983, an assistant professor of New Testament at Yale Divinity School from 1983 to 1984, an associate professor, followed by full professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA, from 1984 to 1997, and a professor of Biblical Theology at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary from 1997 to 2012. Dr. Moessner currently holds the A.A. Bradford Chair of Religion at Texas Christian University, where he teaches biblical studies and early Christianity. He has been invited as 'Guest Professor' at the University of Tübingen (1993 to 1994), and as a 'Senior Research Fellow' at the 'Centre for Advanced Studies,' University of Regensburg, Germany (2019).
Prior to becoming an esteemed religious educator, Dr. Moessner pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1971, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1975, a B.A.--M.A., Honours School of Theology, from the University of Oxford in 1976, and a Doctor of Theology from the University of Basel in 1983. In 1985 he was ordained in the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), and in the same year became a member of the prestigious international guild of New Testament scholars, the S.N.T.S. A prolific author, he has penned several books and numerous articles, including Lord of the Banquet: The Literary and Theological Significance of the Lukan Travel Narrative; Luke the Historian of Israel's Legacy, Theologian of Israel's Christ, and was chief editor of Luke the Historian of Israel series, etc. Moreover, he has lectured internationally in five continents, and in 2016 Dr. Moessner was honored by his peers in a special session at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature as a "premier scholar of the Lukan writings."
Over the years in conjunction with his career Dr. Moessner has volunteered in his field and community. He sat on the board of directors of the Rotary Club of Dubuque from 2002 to 2006 and the Dubuque Rescue Mission from 2001 to 2008. From 1995 he has served on a committee of the Society of New Testament Studies (SNTS) to help rejuvenate and re-organize the degrees of theology in four eastern European universities by building up their libraries and holding conferences in Sofia, Bulgaria, St. Petersburg, Russia, Cluj, Romania, and Belgrade, Serbia. Dr. Moessner is the proud father of two children and married to Jeanne M. Stevenson-Moessner. His avocations include traveling, music, and history.
In light of his many achievements in the field, Dr. Moessner has received a number of awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2017 he was President of the Southwest Region of the Society of Biblical Studies, and recently has been invited twice by the Russian Orthodox Church to give lectures in Moscow. In 2010 he was awarded the John Knox Coit Prize in Teaching Excellence from the University of Dubuque, and in 2007 was invited by the Municipality of Corinth, Greece, as one of three Americans to give a lecture with other international scholars in celebrating 1950-years from the time of Paul the Apostle's first visit and writing of the Epistles to the Corinthians of the New Testament. Dr. Moessner has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America.
