Dr. Yamauchi was drawn to antiquity and Biblical scholarship by his conversion to Christianity at age 15. He attended Columbia Bible College from 1955 to 1956. He then attended the University of Hawaii from 1957 to 1958, intending to become a missionary serving the Japanese diaspora in Brazil, before deeper study convinced him to pursue a career in academia. He completed a Bachelor of Arts from Shelton College in 1960 and attended Brandeis University, where he studied under Biblical scholar Cyrus Gordon. Dr. Yamauchi completed a Master of Arts in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1964 from Brandeis University.
He was a graduate assistant at Brandeis University from 1962 to 1963, and joined Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 1964. Dr. Yamauchi remained an assistant professor at Rutgers through 1969. He joined Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1969, serving as an associate professor before ascending the ranks to professor in 1973 and director of graduate studies from 1978 to 1982. He remained with Miami University through 2005.
Dr. Yamauchi is the author of numerous works on the Bible and early Christianity, including "Pre-Christian Gnosticism" in 1973 and "Persia and the Bible" in 1990, and the co-editor with Marvin Wilson of "Dictionary of Daily Life in Biblical and Post-Biblical Antiquity"; it was first issued in four volumes from 2014 to 2016, and then issued in a single volume in 2017. He was named a fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities and of the Institute for Holy Land Studies in Jerusalem in 1968, a fellow of the Institute for Advanced Christian Studies from 1974 to 1975, and a grantee of the American Philosophical Society in 1970. His publications have been translated into a dozen foreign languages.
Dr. Yamauchi is a past president of the American Science Affiliation, and the Conference on Faith and History. He is the past president of the Near East Archaeological Society, the Evangelical Theological Society, and the American Oriental Society's Mid-West branch.
