Dr. Richard Fessler has been presented with a Legend of Neuroscience Award in Mexico City and the Sarveshwari Award from the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences.

Backed by his considerable clinical expertise in degenerative disc disease, head and neck trauma, neural transplantation, neurosurgery and much more, Dr. Fessler has excelled as a professor for Rush University Medical Center since 2013. Previously, he served as a professor for Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation from 2007 until 2013, a vice chairman of neurosurgery at Northwestern University from 2007 to 2012 and as the chairman of neurosurgery at the University of Chicago from 2000 to 2007. Dr. Fessler began his career as a professor with the University of Florida from 1989 to 2000 and with the Rush University Medical Center in the early 2000s.
Intrigued by the workings of the brain and its behavior, Dr. Fessler pursued an education at Lawrence University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1974. Two years later, he obtained a Master of Science in the same discipline from North Dakota State College of Science. In 1983, Dr. Fessler graduated from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago with a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology, physiology and medicine.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Fessler remains affiliated with the American Association of Neurological Surgery, the Congress of Neurological Surgery and the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. Due to his outstanding achievements, he has been celebrated on a number of occasions. In addition to accepting the Best Surgeon in the U.S. Award for more than 20 years, he has been presented with a Legend of Neuroscience Award in Mexico City, the Sarveshwari Award from the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences and inclusion into 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century from the International Biographical Center in 2000. Looking toward the future, Dr. Fessler intends to be retired and spending most of his time in his basic science laboratory.
