Mr. Schwartz is a film and theater director with more than 55 years of innovation in his field. His interest in drama began in college, when he joined the theater department after failing to make the basketball team. He quickly developed a passion for acting and theater design, and took summer classes in film production. Mr. Schwartz graduated from Wisconsin State College in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in speech and theater, and subsequently earned a Master of Arts in theater from the University of Kansas in 1965. He concluded his education at Ohio University in 1985 with a Master of Fine Arts in theater directing and filmmaking.
From 1965 to 1969, Mr. Schwartz served as a professor of theater at Fort Hays State College in Fort Hays, Kansas. He soon took up similar roles at Saint Leo College in Dade City, Florida, from 1970 until 1971, and at Bowie State College in Maryland from 1971 until 1974. He maintained activity as a production manager for the New Theatre of Washington between 1975 and 1976, and the American Theatre in Washington, D.C. from 1976 to 1978.
Mr. Schwartz directed "Square Root of Soul" for Adolph Caesar Productions in Washington and New York City from 1977 to 1979, and was a director for the Playwright's Cooperative between 1973 and 1980. From 1984 until 1986, he garnered a laudable reputation as the producing director at the Washington Theatre Wing of Silver Spring, Maryland. Since 1978, Mr. Schwartz has garnered a laudable reputation as a professor of theater and film at Montgomery College. He found success as the lead instructor and coordinator of the AFI Movie Production Workshops, administered a new film program in conjunction with Montgomery College, from 1997 to 2007, and he considers his work in developing the program to be a career highlight.
Since 1988, Mr. Schwartz has been a director and producer for his company, Ol' Black Bear Productions. He has produced, directed and written numerous films under the auspices of Ol' Black Bear Productions, and is currently working on a feature documentary concert film, "Bluegrass Court Jester." Adjacent to his career, Mr. Schwartz enjoys such diversions as photography and producing a film review podcast.
