Earlier in his career, Dr. Luxenberg was an electrical engineer with the National Security Agency in Fort Meade from 1972 to 1974.
Dr. Luxenberg attributes much of his success to developing expertise in psychological research methods, statistics, database management, and evaluation. With his research skills, he was recommended to research hospitals and hired as a consultant to provide statistical analyses for medical research studies. Throughout his career, Dr. Luxenberg collaborated with numerous health professionals, providing statistical guidance, and performing statistical analysis which lead to the publications of hundreds of articles in referred journals.
In 1999, Professional Data Analysts began evaluating tobacco cessation programs and later became one of the recognized leaders in the field in evaluating those type of programs. He co-authored the issue paper for the North American Quitline Consortium on measuring quit rates, which became the gold standard for evaluating tobacco cessation programs nationwide. This paper provided guidance to state quit lines on how to measure and define tobacco cessation for their clients. With the company proceeding to publish many other research articles, Dr. Luxenberg considers these efforts to be a major highlight of his career.
Alongside his primary responsibilities of CEO, Dr. Luxenberg took on many roles in the evaluation of tobacco cessation related projects including co- and principal investigator, statistician and consultant between 1999 and 2015, for QUITPLAN® with the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco, now known as ClearWay MinnesotaSM , the Connecticut Department of Safety; the Tobacco Prevention and Control Trust Fund Cessation Programs with the Hawaii Department of Health; and Tobacco Quitline with the Bureau of Tobacco Prevention Control at the Florida Department of Health. Dr. Luxenberg was also the co-principal investigator for the evaluation of the Minnesota Department of Health program: "Education Now Babies Later" from 1998 to 2003, as well as a medical research statistical consultant for Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare, St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center now Regions Hospital, Minneapolis Children's Hospital and the Hennepin County Medical Center between 1983 and 2015.
Well-recognized in his field, Dr. Luxenberg is a regular contributor of articles to professional journals. He has notably co-authored over 100 publications in various refereed medical and social science journals. In an effort to remain up to date with developments in his field, Dr. Luxenberg has maintained professional affiliation with a number of organizations, including the American Statistical Association, the American Evaluation Association, the North American Quitline Association, the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, and the Minnesota Evaluation Association, for which he previously served as a treasurer and board member.
Before embarking upon his career, Dr. Luxenberg pursued an education at the Pratt Institute, where he obtained a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, with honors, in 1972. Following this, he went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology with a specialty in behavior genetics at the University of Minnesota in 1986. During this time, Dr. Luxenberg was recognized for his achievement with the National Public Health Service Research Award through the University of Minnesota Behavioral Genetics Program from 1979 to 1982.
