A lifelong careerist, Mr. Gonzalez began working for his father at various companies before deciding to start his own. He was the President of Gonzalez & Co., Inc., from 1970 to 1983. He established Teleponce Cable TV in 1978 when the industry was first becoming popular. He obtained numerous Government permits in order to establish a cable network franchise for the south coast of Puerto Rico. He incorporated the business and expanded it to cover the entire south coast of Puerto Rico. As a result, Mr. Gonzalez became a cable TV industry pioneer in the United States.
During this time, Mr. Gonzalez served as the President and Chief Executive officer of TPC Communications Puerto Rico, Inc., the parent company, from 1986 to 2001, and subsidiaries Tele-Cell Systems Inc., TPC Connect Inc., and TPC Financial Services, Inc., from 1987 to 2001. He was a director of Banco de Ponce, which later merged with Banco Popular and Popular Inc., from 1973 to 2004. He also was a trustee and member of the finance and executive committee of Damas Hospital and Damas Foundation in Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 1975 until 2000. Currently, Mr. Gonzalez is the President and Chief Executive of Ventek Group, Inc., a private investment firm, since 1997.
Before embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Gonzalez graduated from Culver Military Academy of Indiana in 1951 and pursued a formal education at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA, earning a Bachelor's degree in 1955. He then attended Columbia University in the City of New York, where he did postgraduate coursework in business from 1955 to 1956. Following this, Mr. Gonzalez was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving honorably, from 1958 to 1960.
A member of numerous professional organizations related to his field, Mr. Gonzalez also served as the President of the Ponce chapter of the Rotary Club in 1963, was a member of Club Deportivo, Yacht, and the Bankers Club. He also maintained involvement with the National Cable TV Association. In honor of his achievements, Mr. Gonzalez was awarded the Youth Development Program Award by former Vice President Hubert Humphrey in 1966. The Government of France later appointed him an honorary consul from 1969 to 1985. Furthermore, he was selected for inclusion in the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
Mr. Gonzalez's primary mentor was his father, who was a chemist and pharmacist. He presided over a chain of pharmacies all over the island and was a very successful businessman, but passed away at the age of 68. When Mr. Gonzalez was young and working for his father, he was assigned to work at his travel agency, and expanded the business to 14 agencies around the island. He was also in charge of his father's real estate business, which was his initial business career. Everything he learned about business was from his father.
