Dr. Dorward is a microbiologist and a microbiological consultant with more than 40 years of distinction in his field. Fascinated by science as a child, he attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in botany in 1979 and a Master of Science in botany in 1981. He entered the study of infectious disease when he realized the availability of funding and the potential to make a difference in the lives of many by contributing to public health knowledge. Dr. Dorward earned a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology at the University of Montana in 1987.
Dr. Dorward was an instructor at the University of Montana in 1985 and from 1987 to 1988, teaching courses in botany and microbiology. In 1988, he found success as a staff fellow at the National Institutes of Health Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, rising to the position of a senior staff fellow in 1992. Between 1996 and 2008, Dr. Dorward was a microbiologist at the National Institutes of Health Rocky Mount Laboratories, and has served as a staff scientist since 2008. From 1991 until 2009, he was the owner of Infectious Disease Consulting of Hamilton.
Passionate about emergency survival skills and first aid, Dr. Dorward is American Red Cross CPR, first aid, and AED-certified, and has been an amateur emergency radio operator since 1995. He is a patentee in his field and is a frequent contributor to professional journals. A selection of his scientific illustrations were chosen for display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History from 2018 through 2021, an honor he considers a career highlight. Dr. Dorward is the recipient of two 2018 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Merit Awards and a 2017 National Institutes of Health Director's award in recognition of his work as part of the Zika Virus outbreak response team.
