In the years since, Mr. Keating has excelled as the Hartford Courant's capitol bureau chief. He has served as state Capitol bureau chief for 23 of the past 25 years.

Born in New York City and raised on Long Island, he initially pursued an education at Fordham University, from which he earned a bachelor's degree in 1982. Soon thereafter, Mr. Keating graduated with a master's degree in journalism at Columbia University in 1984.
Mr. Keating has had the opportunity to meet many memorable individuals throughout his career. He especially enjoyed covering the U.S. and Soviet Union Summit between President George H.W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev. At the time, he was covering a story about Joseph Verner Reed, who was the chief of protocol under President Bush. Notably, Mr. Keating was able to ride in Mr. Gorbachev's motorcade and meet some of the KGB agents.
Mr. Keating has interviewed and personally known the past six Connecticut governors. He has also interviewed every house speaker, senate president pro tempore and majority leader in Connecticut over the past 26 years.
In 1997, Mr. Keating was honored with First Placement by the New England Associated Press Newspapers Editors Association for his work. Among other awards, he accepted prizes from the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for news in 1987, feature writing in 1990 and business reporting in 1999. Recognized on The Washington Post's list of Top Connecticut Political Reporters on four occasions, He won the Master Reporter Award, which is a career honor, awarded annually to one reporter in all of New England.
