Dr. Robert J. Begiebing is an educator and author who taught at the academic level for nearly 50 years, retiring in 2011 as an emeritus professor of English at Southern New Hampshire University.

Dr. Begiebing is an educator and author who taught at the academic level for nearly 50 years, retiring in 2011 as an emeritus professor of English at Southern New Hampshire University. During his teaching career, he also held appointments at New Hampshire College, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Kentucky. While active at Southern New Hampshire University, Dr. Begiebing notably served as the founding director of the Master of Fine Arts program in fiction and non-fiction between 2006 and 2011, and was active on the board of advisors of the McIninch Gallery on campus between 2008 and 2011.
Widely published, Dr. Begiebing authored a historical trilogy set in New England that includes "The Strange Death of Mistress Coffin," "The Adventures of Allegra Fullerton" and "Rebecca Wentworth's Distraction." He also authored a novel on the life and work of painter J.M.W. Turner, a memoir of growing up in the Berkshires in the 1950s, a collection of his literary and political journalism, two critical books on 20th century fiction, a historical anthology of nature writing in English since the 18th century, approximately 30 articles and stories, and a play. Receiving much acclaim over the years, several of Dr. Begiebing's books have been reviewed in The New York Times, The Times of London and The Los Angeles Times, among other national and regional periodicals. In 2003, his novel in the trilogy "Rebecca Wentworth's Distraction" won the Langum Prize for historical fiction. Meanwhile, the first novel of the same trilogy, "The Strange Death of Mistress Coffin," was selected as a main selection for the Mystery and Literary Guild Book Clubs and was optioned for a film. It is now available from the University Press of New England in a new 20th anniversary e-book and hardcopy edition.
Having undertaken a professional journey which included working as a consultant for the Manuscript Review Service (of the New Hampshire Writers Project), Dr. Begiebing also held various roles with other organizations. He was an inaugural faculty member at the Norman Mailer Writers' Colony in Provincetown, MA, serves on the executive board of the Norman Mailer society and on the editorial board of The Mailer Review. He excelled as a state councilor for the New Hampshire Council of the Arts, a member of the board of trustees for the New Hampshire Writer's Project, a manuscript reviewer for the University of Alabama Press, and the University Press of New England, among other roles. Further, Dr. Begiebing volunteered locally with the Town of Newfields recycling program and school improvement team, and served as the vice president of the Exeter High School Parents' Association.
Dr. Begiebing received a Bachelor of Arts, with high honors, at Norwich University in 1968. He subsequently attained a Master of Arts in English at Boston College in 1970, and a Doctor of Philosophy in English at the University of New Hampshire in 1977. Dr. Begiebing served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve between his graduate degrees, from 1970 to 1972. To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Begiebing has been a member of the Modern Language Association, the Authors Guild, the American Studies Association, AWP, PEN America, and several other industry-related organizations.
In addition to the recognition he has received for his books, Dr. Begiebing's fiction writing has been supported by grants from the Lila-Wallace Foundation and the New Hampshire Council for the Arts. He also received a Senior English Scholar Medal from Norwich University where he was a member of the Academic Honor Society. He was honored three times with an Excellence in Teaching Award from Southern New Hampshire University.
