Mr. Dettmer's parents were both college graduates, and strongly encouraged him to pursue higher education. From 1949 until 1952, he was a student at the U.S. Naval Academy, and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in business and engineering administration in 1955. Mr. Dettmer concluded his academic efforts at Harvard University, completing a Master of Business Administration in 1957.
Between 1957 and 1960 Mr. Dettmer found success as an engineer for Lincoln Electric Company of Cleveland. He continued his career as an associate at Booz, Allen & Hamilton of Cleveland from 1960 to 1964. He left Booz, Allen to form his own investment management firm from 1964 until 1966. He subsequently accepted the position of vice president of operations for Tasa Corporation in Pittsburgh between 1966 and 1968, whereupon he joined Scott Aviation in Lancaster, New York, a division of A-T-O, as president. Mr. Dettmer served as president of A-T-O's George J. Meyer Manufacturing division in Milwaukee from 1970 to 1972.
Mr. Dettmer began his career at PepsiCo, Incorporated, in 1973 as the president of the North American Van Lines subsidiary, rising to become PepsiCo's vice president of financial management and planning in 1976. He became president of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Group, the company owned bottling franchises, in 1979 until he was made PepsiCo's executive vice president and chief financial officer between 1986 and 1996. He considers his time at PepsiCo to have been a career highlight, and the most challenging point in a career suffused with leadership roles. Mr. Dettmer garnered a laudable reputation on the board of directors of Valero Energy from 1996 to 2003, after which he retired.
Respected for his expertise as a leader. Mr. Dettmer devoted his time and knowledge as the chairman of the board of the American Movers Conference, and honored his commitment to education as a trustee of both Miss Porter's School and Manhattanville College. He remains affiliated with Delta Tau Delta and Tau Beta Pi, and with myriad successes to his credit he has been the recipient of several notable awards. Mr. Dettmer has been highlighted in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. Further, he has been presented with the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made a difference in their field.
Mr. Dettmer was born in Kansas to Ira and Dema Dettmer. Currently living in Florida, he has enjoyed many happy years of marriage to his lovely wife. Patricia Isabel York. Together. they are the proud parents of three children-Stephanie, Constance and Robert Brantley-and the doting grandparents of eight grandchildren. In his free time. Mr. Detrmer enjoys boating, traveling, playing tennis and swimming.
