Mr. Hillenmeyer attended Yale University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1965. Following graduation, he joined the Kanawha Valley Bank of Charleston, West Virginia, rising to the role of an assistant secretary from 1967 until 1968. While with Kanawha Valley Bank, Mr. Hillenmeyer was part of a team working to computerize the bank's trust department by sourcing software already used by another bank in Texas. A consultant for the company that had written the software was beginning his own software company, and after the fledgling business ran out of funding, Mr. Hillenmeyer was invited to take over.
Mr. Hillenmeyer became the vice president of this company, CBM, Inc. in 1968, advancing to become the president in 1970, and the chairman and director from 1972 to 1974. He credits this experience as the genesis of his interest in business leadership. Between 1974 and 1978, Mr. Hillenmeyer was the president and the director of Ireland's Restaurants, Incorporated, of Nashville, and the executive vice president of Womco, Incorporated, from 1978 until 1982. In 1983, he accepted the position as president and the director of Southern Hospitality Corporation of Nashville, after which he became the chairman between 1989 and 1994.
In 1995, Mr. Hillenmeyer became the chairman, the chief executive officer, and the director of Skillsearch Corporation of Nashville, where he would remain until 1999, when he joined the Cooker Restaurant Corporation as their chairman and chief executive officer. He would remain with Cooker Restaurant Corporation through 2004. Mr. Hillenmeyer has been a consultant at Compass Executives, LLC, since 2006, and the president of Music City Flats, LLC, since 2008.
Mr. Hillenmeyer is an avid supporter of causes supporting children and youth. To this end, he has served on the board of directors of Junior Achievement of Nashville since 1985. Moreover, Mr. Hillenmeyer is a former member of the board of directors of Tennessee Special Olympics and a former trustee of Harding Academy, Nashville.
