Dr. Pilkey is a professor emeritus of earth and ocean sciences with more than 55 years of contribution to his field. He initially pursued an education at Washington State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1957. He later obtained Master of Science in 1959 at the University of Montana, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962 at Florida State University. Dr. Pilkey completed service in the United States Army Reserves from 1960 until his honorable discharge in 1968.
From 1962 to 1965, Dr. Pilkey worked as a research associate at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island. He later held the post of an associate professor of geology at Duke University from 1965 to 1972. Serving briefly as a visiting professor at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, Dr. Pilkey was active as a senior research geologist for the United States Geographical Survey in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, between 1975 to 1976.
From 1983 to 1999, Dr. Pilkey excelled as the James B. Duke professor of geology at Duke University, where he founded several programs for the study of developed shorelines. Over the course of his career, his research focus shifted from deep-sea geology and basin floor currents to human interactions with coastal areas and shorelines. Dr. Pilkey has maintained his involvement in shoreline conservation efforts and efforts to respond to rising sea levels, and strongly discourages continued development close to shorelines.
Providing his research to multiple professional journals, Dr. Pilkey is the editor of more than 45 books. He is proud to have contributed to the public recognition of the marine impacts of global climate change. Among numerous accolades, he has been presented with a 1999 Outstanding Public Service Award by FEMA and a 1987 Francis Shepard Medal for Excellence in Marine Geology. Likewise, Dr. Pilkey is a former president of the North Carolina Academy of Science and the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, and a member of the Geological Society of America.
