Dr. Isaacson is a geologist and interim director of the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS). Beginning his new role part-time in 2018, the IGS is a non-regulatory state agency that leads in the collection, interpretation and dissemination of geologic and mineral data for Idaho. Located on the campus of the University of Idaho in Moscow and in Boise, the agency has served the state since 1919. Prior to 1984, it was formerly known as the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology.
A distinguished career that spans more than 40 years, prior to assuming his current position Dr. Isaacson was a tenured professor at the University of Idaho in the department of geological sciences between 1978 and 2017. Some of his more recent courses have included Principles of Paleontology, Principles of Stratigraphy and Sedimentation and Geologic Development of North America. An expert in stratigraphy and paleontology, his research efforts included late Devonian glaciations of western Gondwana and its consequences, late Paleozoic stratigraphy and paleogeography of the central Andes, Devonian through Permian sequence stratigraphy of southern Idaho and late Paleozoic biogeography. Some of Dr. Isaacson's other academic appointments included serving as a research associate at Amherst College in Massachusetts, adjunct assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts and as a visiting assistant professor at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, between 1974 and 1978.
Dr. Isaacson had the pleasure to work with the National Science Foundation as a panelist and the Czech Academy of Sciences as a reviewer. He also provided his time to the Idaho Museum of Geology as a volunteer. In 1991, he was honored as a keynote speaker at the geologic conference in Rio De Janeiro. Dr. Isaacson has also written extensively, contributing articles in his area of expertise in scholarly articles since 1974.
An alumnus of the University of Colorado at Boulder, Dr. Isaacson received a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. He later attended Oregon State University in Corvallis where he acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in geology in 1974. He is a certified professional geologist in the state of Louisiana. A fellow of the Geological Society of America, Dr. Isaacson is also a member of the Association of Paleontology of Argentina and the Paleontology Society.
A two-time Fulbright scholar recipient, Dr. Isaacson traveled to Czechoslovakia in 1987 and Argentina in 2011. He also secured several grants throughout his career from the National Science Foundation, the Petroleum Research Fund and the National Geographic Society. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Isaacson has been featured in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
