Ms. Wurf, now retired, formerly worked for several great organizations. Most recently, she served as the director of public policy for Girls, Inc. Founded in 1864 and headquartered in New York, it is a 501 non-profit organization of the United States that encourages all girls to be "strong, smart and bold" through direct service and advocacy. The organization equips girls with the skills to navigate through economic, gender and social barriers and to grow up as independent individuals. Prior to her tenure at Girls, Inc., Ms. Wurf spent time as a labor program manager for Affinity Group Marketing in Washington, DC, and as a director for the President's Council on Youth Opportunity, also in Washington, DC.
Growing up in San Francisco during a time when there was significant union activity, while in junior high school, Ms. Wurf developed an affinity for social justice and equality. In high school she edited the school newspaper and was a leader on the debate team. She started college at the University of California Berkeley where she again worked on the newspaper and also served on the student government. In that role she learned of the call among many student bodies to convene a meeting with the purpose of creating a national student organization with the main goals of ending university segregation and expanding academic freedom. She was designated a delegate by the student government and went on to be one of the five students who worked for the next year to create the US National Student Association. In the second year she helped inaugurate an international travel program for American students. At this point, she completed a graduate year at Columbia University, while working at the university.
Within a year she was recruited by a major New York City labor union to be their first educational director and developed a major leadership training program. She also started a workers' international travel program in conjunction with a number of unions and non-profit organizations.
After marriage to Jerry Wurf, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFL-CIO), they home moved to Washington, DC.
In the 1970s, Ms. Wurf co-founded and chaired the National Collaboration for Youth and was active with US Dept. of Labor programs for major city youth groups. Working with the Labor Dept, she raised the issue of gender equity among federal programs. Cooperating with numerous women's organizations and working as the director of advocacy for Girls Inc., she continued to raise this issue over the years.
Ms. Wurf has been cited in the 22nd edition of Who's Who of American Women. Married to the late Jerry Wurf in 1960, Ms. Wurf has two children and one grandchild. She resides in Washington, DC.
