With more than 60 years of professional excellence to his credit, Ambassador Cohen has flourished as a consultant and the founder of Cohen & Woods International since 1993. Prior to this appointment, he worked as an assistant secretary for African Affairs with the United States Department of State in Washington D.C. for four years, having previously contributed as a special assistant to the President and Senior Director for Africa with the National Security Council of Washington D.C. from 1987 to 1993. Between 1969 and 1986, Ambassador Cohen served as an ambassador for the Republics of Senegal and Gambia, Dakar, while holding the posts of the deputy assistant secretary, the deputy director general, and a director for the Bureau of African Affairs as well as the Bureau of Intelligence and Research for the United States Department of State.
Earlier in his career, Ambassador Cohen excelled as the deputy chief of missions for the American Embassy in Kinshasa, Zaire, as well as the economic commercial officer for the American Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia, for four years. He also found success as a political counselor for the American Embassy in Paris, France, and completed foreign service for the United States Department of State. Throughout his career thus far, Ambassador Cohen was proud to have negotiated the end of two civil wars in Ethiopia and Angola between January and June of 1991. In addition to his primary endeavors as an ambassador, he also provided his expertise as a senior adviser for the Global Coalition for Africa from 1994 to 2000. Civically, Ambassador Cohen dedicated his time and resources as the president of the French International School in Washington D.C. more than a decade and was actively enlisted in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.
A graduate of the City University of New York, Ambassador Cohen earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal in 1953. Moreover, he graduated from American University in 1962. In light of his exceptional undertakings, he was presented with honorary Doctorates from Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Southeastern University in 1990.
For his accomplishments in the field, Ambassador Cohen has been the recipient of numerous honors and accolades. He has notably accepted the French Legion of Honor, the Belgian Order of Leopold II, the U.S. Foreign Service Distinction of Career Ambassador, and the Christian A. Herter Award from the United States Department of State, among others. Likewise, Ambassador Cohen has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Politics.
Ambassador Cohen is married to Suzanne Karpman Cohen of France. After becoming an American citizen, she had a career as a language expert and French instructor in the State Department and CIA training schools. They have two sons, Marc and Alain, who are electrical engineers and technology entrepreneurs in Washington, D.C.
