Ms. Muhammad likewise accepted the role of National Director of Fundraising just over 10 years ago in 2009. In prior years, she consulted with the late President William Tolbert of Liberia. This was her first trip to Africa, in 1977, and President Tolbert arranged for six ambassadors of African countries to host her during her stay.
Responsible for assisting in coordinating two of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan's International World Friendship Tours, where they traveled to over a dozen different African and Middle Eastern nations. Ms. Muhammad was also the National Deputy Director for the Million Family March and the Million Man March in Washington, D.C. She also served on the Board of the Millions More Movement, also in Washington, D.C. Each of these movements was spearheaded by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. She served in President Jimmy Carter's Inauguration Committee Protocol Department. She was active with various committees and organizations committed to fighting apartheid in South Africa. She also worked in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, West Africa, for United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in connection with Boston University, and has been a supporter of various causes for women and children. In 2008, Ms. Muhammad began serving as a Commissioner of the Governor's Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes, appointed by then-Illinois-Governor Rod Blagojevich.
Leading a diversified career, Ms. Muhammad worked as a Technical Librarian for General Dynamics Astronautics in San Diego, CA in 1960. Subsequently, she relocated to Washington, D.C., where she contributed for the next 25 years in various positions. Initially serving as a secretary to Congressman Lionel Van Deerlin (D-CA), and as the Special Assistant to the Commissioners with the President's Commission on Civil Disorders. She was later acquired by the University of the District of Columbia as the Director of Community Outreach and as an Enrollment Management and Recruitment Counselor. Ms. Muhammad also briefly worked as a Marketing Director for Manera Travel Agency in Washington, D.C. She has toured 57 cities as an Ebony Fashion Fair Model sponsored by Johnson Publications.
In 2007, Ms. Muhammad authored the 2007 book "Memories." She also contributed numerous articles to professional journals. Ms. Muhammad likewise maintains her own website at www.claudettesmemories.com.
A student of the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa, during the late 1970s, Ms. Muhammad later received a Bachelor of Arts at American University in 1982. She also completed postgraduate courses at the United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland, the University of Geneva and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. A life member of the National Council of Negro Women, Ms. Muhammad is also a member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Honored in 2002 with a Women in History Award from the Urban League, Ms. Muhammad also received a Unity Day Conference Award in 2000. In her earlier years, she received a Junior Achievement Award for the years of 1961 and 1962 and was a finalist for Miss Bronze California in 1958.
