Ms. Howe is a freelance writer and author who spent the majority of her career as a newspaper reporter, bureau chief, and correspondent for the New York Times. Employed by the renowned publication for 37 years, she spent 10 as part of its metropolitan staff prior to her retirement. She has traveled the world to pursue her journalist endeavors, and over the years has been based in Ankara, Beirut, and Rio de Janeiro. Ms. Howe is proud to have reported on the Algerian War and the conflicts in Angola and Mozambique. She also covered stories on the military regime in Brazil, the coup against Allende in Chile, the earthquake at Managua, post-revolution convulsions in Portugal, and Arab-Israeli conflicts in Lebanon. When Ms. Howe returned to the U.S. to join the metropolitan staff in New York, she focused her efforts on the dissemination of information regarding immigration issues. In addition to her field work, Ms. Howe lectured at the University Center in Virginia, Rutgers University, and internationally in the French Lycée in Fez, Morocco. She also served as a delegate at the International Women's Media Conference in Washington.
Born in Shanghai, China, Ms. Howe and her family were forced to flee to the U.S. due to Japanese incursions and the rise of communism. She notes that her personal experiences inspired her to pursue a career in journalism, and as such, she attended the School of Journalism at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where she received a Bachelor of Letters in 1950. Appropriately credentialed, Ms. Howe assumed a position with Radio Maroc in Rabat, Morocco, which she held from 1951 to 1955. In 1952, she contributed to McGraw-Hill World News and the British Broadcasting Corporation from Rabat until 1962. In 1957, she joined Time Life as a part-time reporter in Algiers, Rabat, and Lisbon, until 1965.
Ms. Howe has contributed articles to multiple publications over the years, such as Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, The Middle East Journal, The Africa Report, the International Herald Tribune, Monitor, and Scholastic. She also authored several books, including "Al-Andalus Rediscovered: Iberia's New Muslims," in 2012, "Morocco: The Islamist Awakening and Other Challenges," in 2005, and "Turkey Today: A Nation Divided Over Islam's Revival," in 2000. Ms. Howe was honored with a Poetry Award from Douglass College in 1950 and she received an Adelaide Marcus Zagoren Science fellowship from Rutgers University in 1991.
