A commended expert in Middle Eastern studies, Dr. Hooglund excels as an editor for Middle East Critique and as an emeritus professor. Backed by fluency in Persian, French, Arabic, Turkish, German and Swedish, he has taught at universities around the world, including the St. Anthony's College at the University of Oxford, Bowdoin College, Shiraz University in Iran, Ohio State University, University of California at Berkeley, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, Bates College, and Lund University, Sweden. Apart from his teaching experience, his expertise in Middle Eastern studies began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Iran in the late 1960s. Subsequently, Dr. Hooglund gained valuable expertise in education and academic research, thanks to a University of Utah-administrated scholarship to study advanced Persian at the University of Tehran (1970) and a Fulbright Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship to carry our field research in Iran (1971-72). These experiences prepared him to become the assistant to the Director of the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Over the years, Dr. Hooglund served as a research director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, a senior analyst for Iran Documents Project at National Security Archive and on the editorial committee of Middle East Report. During the 1990s and early-2000s, he excelled in editorial positions for The Middle East Journal, Iran Times International and the Journal of Palestine Studies. Additionally, Dr. Hooglund's published works include scores of articles and several books, including "Navigating Contemporary Iran," "Gender in Contemporary Iran," "Iran, A Country Study", "Twenty Years of Islamic Revolution: Political and Social Change in Iran Since 1979" and "Land and Revolution in Rural Iran."
Before entering the Peace Corps, Dr. Hooglund earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Maine. He continued his studies at the Johns Hopkins University, graduating with a Master of Arts in international affairs in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in international relations and Middle Eastern studies in 1975. In the late 1990s and early 2010s, Dr. Hooglund was awarded research fellowships at Oxford University, from the U.S. Institute for Peace, and at Lund University.
Dr. Hooglund was born in Waterville, Maine, and grew up in a large extended family that included great-grandparents, grandparents, many aunts and uncles and numerous cousins. At four months of age, his family took him to Long Pond in nearby Belgrade Lakes, and he has spent part of every summer there ever since. After retiring in 2013, he moved to Belgrade Lakes and since has been active in his community, serving on the boards of several volunteer civic organizations, including the Belgrade Historical Society, the Belgrade Regional Health Center, The Friends of the Belgrade Public Library and Friends of Belgrade Lakes Village. He also remains involved with Middle East affairs, continuing to edit Middle East Critique, teaching courses about Middle East politics for the Gold Leaf Institute Senior College of the University of Maine at Farmington, and giving presentations about the Middle East for the Maine Humanities Council. Looking forward to the future, Dr. Hooglund intends to publish a journal he kept while teaching college in Iran throughout the 1978-79 Revolution and a book based on his current research about the history of Lebanese immigration to Waterville, Maine, during the early 20th century.
