Relative to his present vocation, Dr. Soper has served as a professor of addiction medicine at the Center for Professional Excellence at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences since 2017. He additionally worked as a consulting physician on behalf of the Drug Court of the 21st Judicial District of Tennessee from 2006 to 2011. During this time, he became active as a consultant between 2004 and 2008. In 2015, Dr. Soper retired from his position as the editor-in-chief of the American Society of Addiction Weekly, a newsletter for the organization which he created in 2011.
In civic endeavors, Dr. Soper maintains numerous concurrent roles in organizations closely in association to his field. Moreover, he has found success as the director for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals since 2016, as well as a member of the Opiod Task Force with the American Medical Association since 2014. Furthermore, he has been a councilor of the Tennessee Medical Association since 2015, a member on the board of directors for the Nashville Academy of Medicine since 2014, and a diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine since 2009. Past appointments to Dr. Soper's credit include the president of the Tennessee Society of Addiction Medicine between 2006 and 2008, and the secretary and treasurer for the Nashville Academy of Medicine.
Before embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Soper pursued his education at the University of Michigan, where he studied in philosophy and psychology. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, he subsequently continued his studies at Capella University, from which he earned a Master of Arts in addiction psychology. Following this achievement, Dr. Soper obtained a Doctor of Medicine in the University of Tennessee at the Health Science Center College of Medicine in 1977. Dr. Soper concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Jurisprudence at the Vanderbilt University Law School in 2002.
In accounting for his success, Dr. Soper credits his belief in the satisfaction he attains from helping individuals reestablish their own self-esteem and setting them on the path to abstinence behavior. Nonetheless, he accepts credit for the positive outcomes of his patients, knowing that they are first-and-foremost the drivers of their own success, and he is only a facilitator. Dr. Soper maintains that addiction is a very treatable medical disorder of brain chemistry, which grows from the mind's own system of awards as opposed to a character defect, of which he is always available to help patients return from the shadows.
