MAPLEWOOD, NJ, October 30, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Peter Blumenthal, MD, MPH, FACPM, FACOEM, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Blumenthal is an occupational physician, with training in pharmacology and toxicology and clinical experience in trauma. He received his M.D. degree from the medical school in Bonn, Germany in 1970, and his M.P.H. from the joint program at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Rutgers in 1996. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Occupational Medicine as well as the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners and a Certified Medical Review Officer.
In medical school he received a stipend of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation. The 'Studienstiftung' also supported his academic medical doctorate in biochemistry with ultimate promotion in 1975.
Dr. Blumenthal's clinical education consisted of a rotating internship followed by a two year medical residency at University Hospitals in Bonn (1970-71) and Berlin, Germany (1971-73), respectively. He spent most of his time working 'hands on' in intensive care units. Next, he entered successive fellowships in clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, the first while serving as an instructor of medicine at Tulane (1973-1975) supported by a Merck Sharp & Dohme Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology. During the second he taught clinical pharmacology at SUNY at Buffalo (1975-1977). The next seven years, he served as Scientific Director of the Hoffmann-LaRoche sponsored Clinical Pharmacology Unit at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. For 18 years and during 12,000 hours he also very much enjoyed 'hands on' work as a part time emergency physician in Northern New Jersey.
During his work as a clinical pharmacologist, he received recognition as the first to measure plasma nitroglycerin in a man, as well as the first to measure saccharin in neonatal cord blood. In April 2001 he published a review entitled "Bioterrorism, Hell of Hype?" five months prior to the events of '9/11' and the subsequent anthrax letters. Dr. Blumenthal has authored, co-authored, and collaborated in numerous articles and publications.
When starting on a doctoral thesis in biochemistry as early as 1967, his mentor made sure he learned to use each piece of equipment in the lab and to apply basic statistics. Using radioactively labeled compounds, Dr. Blumenthal began to submit to mandated medical screening programs for many years and met some gifted future colleagues. The 'repetitive exposure' to occupational medicine raised his interest in this discipline and resulted in a career change in 1984.
In the eighties, when industry favored in-house corporate health programs Dr. Blumenthal served as Medical Director of ITT's Communication Services Group and later of American Cyanamid's Shulton ('Old Spice') Group. During both assignments he built comprehensive medical programs at corporate headquarters in New Jersey as well as at out of state production facilities. He conducted voluntary annual examinations and headed a full spectrum of wellness programs, including employee assistance programs. He took care of injured employees, assured OSHA compliance by designing special survey programs and became a member of the corporate safety team. Very unfortunately, both assignments ended after corporate buyouts.
The nineties saw industry outsourcing its corporate health programs. Dr. Blumenthal joined a chain of occupational clinics, which later became part of Concentra®. He started up their Elizabeth facility where he served as its first Clinic Medical Director. His clinical experience in emergency medicine came in handy. He has worked as an independent medical consultant and developed strong professional ties with other consulting physicians. This helps in his present role as Regional Medical Director, New Jersey of IMX Medical Management Services, Inc. where he now mentors other examiners. Since 1992, Dr. Blumenthal has conducted over 36,000 independent medical examinations of his own.
Dr. Blumenthal enjoys teaching and speaking assignments in continuous medical education as well as in continuous legal education. He holds an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Rutgers - NJMS. Locally, he has served as President of the Essex County Medical Society in 2003/04. He is the chairman of the Medical Legal Committee of the ECMS. Regionally, he has chaired the Council on Communications 2003/5 and has served on the Council on Legislature, the Bioterrorism Task Force and was a former trustee of the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey. He serves on the Bioethics Committee and presently holds the office of Treasurer of the Medical Society of New Jersey. Nationally, he has served as Speaker of the House of Delegates of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and as member of the Executive Committee of that College in 2004/5. He is a former member of ACOEM's Board. Deeply involved in the medical professional community, he is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and the American College of Preventive Medicine.
He has maintained a strident civic presence in his local community as well. Having founded the first daycare center at a German University in 1968, Dr. Blumenthal has been supporting several child-oriented service groups ever since such as the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and Kids Chance of New Jersey. He serves as a Trustee of the Northern New Jersey Counsel of the Boy Scouts of America where his fund raising has earned him with a Silver Beaver Award. The Essex County Medical Society has honored him with its Founders Award.
Dr. Blumenthal and his wife Marianne have raised three children in Maplewood, NJ.
Looking forward to the future, Dr. Blumenthal aspires to continue performing medical legal exams, mentoring junior colleagues, teaching students at Rutgers - New Jersey Medical School and conducting classes in continuous medical and continuous legal education.
