After spending four years overseas, Dr. Plante returned to the United States in 1974, joining the faculty at Purdue University as an assistant professor six years later. He then moved up the ranks to the roles of an associate professor from 1985 to 1990, a full professor from 1991 to 2001, and a senior associate dean from 1999 to 2006. During this time, Dr. Plante was bestowed a chaired professor in 2002.
Prior to beginning his professional career, Dr. Plante pursued a formal education at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, earning a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1970. He then enlisted as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1974, during which he was stationed in Germany. After completing his service, Dr. Plante matriculated at the University of Georgia, where he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1980.
Active in his local community, Dr. Plante volunteered with the Special Olympics in Tippecanoe County, and the United Way of Lafayette from 2002 to 2004. In addition to his civic endeavors, he has maintained involvement with numerous organizations related to his field such as the Institute of Operations Research and Management Science, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering. A prolific writer, Dr. Plante also served as an area editor for Production and Operations Management from 1990 to 1995 and an editorial board member for Strategic Management from 1995 to 2000, as well as contributed over 60 articles to professional journals.
In honor of his research contributions, IISE Transactions gave Dr. Plante an honorable mention for Best Research Paper in 2018. Moreover, he was selected for inclusion in the sixth edition of Who's Who in American Education, the eighth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 56th through 60th editions of Who's Who in America. Now in retirement, Dr. Plante enjoys golfing, reading, and skiing in his spare time. He has been married to his loving wife, Jean Karole Hostetler, for more than 35 years, and together they have raised three wonderful sons, Michael, Eric, and Jason.
