Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Wiatr pursued formal education at Benedictine University in Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1969. Subsequently, he graduated with a Master of Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1974. Dr. Wiatr concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1985.
Dr. Wiatr began his career as a teacher and a coach at Saint Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago between 1969 and 1974. Soon thereafter, he served Swift & Co. (Esmark) as a laboratory manager and technical director of research and quality assurance from 1974 to 1979. He later accepted a position with Nalco (now Ecolab, Inc.) in Naperville, Illinois, as a senior microbiologist in the water and wastewater division. Throughout his time with aforementioned company, Dr. Wiatr found success as a senior research biologist, a group leader of water microbiology research and technical support until his departure in 1994. As he continued his career, Dr. Wiatr worked in executive research-based posts with Calgon (ECCI) and Buckman, Inc.
A professional microbiologist and biochemist, Dr. Wiatr has written and contributed to a myriad of articles in professional journals. Furthermore, he invented products that are currently used in treatment of swimming pools and spas, water and wastewater, pulp and paper, and metalworking fluid. Other achievements to Dr. Wiatr's credit include 26 patents covering non-toxic biocontrol, enzyme applications for controlling bacterial adhesion on equipment and surfaces, industrial c1eaning, and combination antimicrobials. In addition to his primary profession, Dr. Wiatr has conducted several workshops with several institutions such as University of Georgia-Athens (department of biochemistry), Montana State University (biofilm consortium), BASF-Ludwigshafen, Germany, SAPPI North American Technical Center, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, among others.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Wiatr received a travel award from the American Society for Microbiology and was recognized as Researcher of the Year by the Nalco Water Division. He was a chapter president of Sigma Xi Research Society for the high-tech research corridor in Illinois. He has been a featured speaker for the Association of Water Technologies (AWT), Cooling Tower Institute, and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, the Society for Industrial Microbiology, and the American Society for Microbiology.
Outside of his primary work responsibilities, Dr. Wiatr has excelled in committee work for the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (microbially induced corrosion), AWT (Legionella, Cooling Water, Biocides), and a variety of technical government committees in Washington, DC. He enjoys weight training, swimming, playing the piano, watching college football, and spending time with his grandchildren.
