Mr. Shenkman is a financial executive with more than 50 years of innovation in his field. He is considered one of the pioneers in the high yield, leveraged finance market. The son of an entrepreneur, Mr. Shenkman's interest in business and finance was strongly encouraged, and he remembers receiving his first subscription to the Wall Street Journal as a teenager. He matriculated at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. Mr. Shenkman continued his education at The George Washington University, receiving Master of Business Administration in 1967.
Mr. Shenkman achieved the rank of a first lieutenant in the United States Army Computer Systems Command at Fort Lee, Virginia, where he served from 1967 until 1969. Upon returning to civilian life, he began his career as a securities analyst for New England Merchants Bank of Boston between 1969 and 1971. Mr. Shenkman subsequently became an equity analyst for Stone & Webster Securities Corporation of Boston until 1973.
Mr. Shenkman garnered a laudable reputation as a research analyst and a portfolio manager for Fidelity Management & Research Company from 1973 until 1979, where he managed Fidelity's first high yield bond mutual fund. In 1979, he became the vice president and co-head of the Special Securities Department at Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb in New York. From 1983 to 1985 he served as the President of First Investors Asset Management Company in New York. In 1985, Mr. Shenkman founded Shenkman Capital Management, a leading asset manager specializing in leveraged finance, where he serves as President and Co-Chief investment Officer.
In civic affairs, Mr. Shenkman is a trustee of numerous organizations, including the Museum of American Finance, and trustee emeritus of The George Washington University. Mr. Shenkman served 20 years on the Board of Governors at the University of Connecticut Foundation, and was elected Chairman of the Foundation Board for three years. He has also been a member of the Board of Trustees at Wilbraham and Monson Academy since 1969. He has served as Treasurer of the Union League Club of New York. He was elected into the University of Connecticut School of Business Hall of Fame in 2002, and the Fixed Income Analysts Society Hall of Fame in 2018. In honor of his contributions to the development of the leveraged finance market, Mr. Shenkman was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Connecticut in 2007. In addition, he has co-authored two textbooks on the leveraged finance market.
