Jeff Byrne grew up in a small town in the Northeast corner of North Dakota. He and his family attended the Methodist church there. After High School, he ventured a whole 80 miles south to attend the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. There he met Janice (Grove) and was married in his senior year. Janice was a lifelong Lutheran and Jeff a Methodist, so they compromised, and Jeff joined the Lutheran Church. After his degree, he had a choice whether to attend Med School at Grand Forks or to attend Grad School at the U of South Dakota. Grad School came with a fellowship, so it was off to Vermillion, South Dakota. There the oldest son, Chris, was born. Jeff earned M.A. and PhD. degrees there, then did a three year Post doctorate, teaching and doing research at the University of Manitoba Medical School in Winnipeg, Canada.
After Manitoba, Jeff and his family, including new daughter, Maura, came to Evansville where he worked for Bristol-Meyers in cardiovascular drug research. The family lived in an apartment near U of E, and joined Peace Lutheran Church. After purchasing a house Northwest of Evansville, they became members of Emanuel Lutheran Church.
In the mid 70s, Jeff's wife died of cancer. After a time, he and the organist at Emanuel (Margaret Ann) were playing guitar and singing together (remember Folk music?). Jeff and Margaret Ann were married in 1978 and his second son, Jason was born a year and a half later. Although Margaret Ann is a lifelong Roman Catholic, Jeff remains a steadfast Lutheran.
In 1987, Bristol-Myers moved the family to Connecticut, where Jeff worked in a new research facility at Wallingford. Son Chris stayed in Indiana, daughter Maura attended college in Massachusetts, and Jeff, Margaret Ann and Jason lived in Southington, CT. It wasn't long, however, until Bristol-Myers and Squibb Pharmaceutical companies joined, and the next move was to Princeton, New Jersey in 1990. The family lived across the Delaware River from Princeton, in Langhorne, in Bucks County Pennsylvania. In 1994, after 25 years in pharmaceutical research, the company made Jeff an offer of retirement, and he accepted. After a year of "retirement", Jeff found a job doing computer programming, writing database applications for a firm called Contemporary Software Concepts.
Jeff, Margaret Ann and Jason returned to Evansville in 2000, and Jeff returned to Emanuel Lutheran Church. He transferred his membership to Grace Lutheran Church in 2006, and was part of the great merger in 2006-07 that formed Grace and Peace. He sings with the choir, takes his turn as assisting minister, and is presently on the church council, serving as Finance/Stewardship chairman. He also serves as President of the Board of the Warrick County Museum; he is involved in Habitat for Humanity of Evansville and enjoys reading and singing Karaoke.
Several years ago, he had an opportunity to participate in Lay Minister training sponsored by the Evansville Conference of the ELCA. Since then, he has served occasionally as the supply pastor for churches in Indiana and Kentucky. His favorite Hymn is 'Just As I Am'. His favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:18 (look it up).
