With more than 45 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Lee served in various roles at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1977 until his retirement in 2017, at which point he was recognized as a university distinguished professor emeritus. Prior to attaining this designation, he excelled at the aforementioned institution as a university distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering since 1999 and both the founder and the director of the Center for Power Electronics Systems since 1998, a research and education program committed to creating electric processing systems of the highest value to society. Dr. Lee was further appointed as the Lewis A. Hester chair in engineering from 1994 to 1999 and a James S. Tucker professor from 1986 to 1994, and advanced from an assistant professor to a full professor between 1977 and 1983.
Additionally, Dr. Lee was recognized as an Honorary Li Kwoh-Ting chair professor by National Central University in 2011 and an Honorary Sun Yuen-Chuan chair professor by National Tsing Hua University in 2001. From 1992 to 2009, he found much success as the co-founder and the chairman of the board of Virginia Power Technologies, Incorporated, which became a global leader in providing power conversion solutions for use in avionics, military, space and industrial applications. Before he dedicated his life to academia, he was active as a member of the technical staff at TRW Incorporated, an aerospace- and automotive-focused corporation in California, from 1974 to 1977. Dr. Lee began his professional journey as a teaching assistant at Duke University from 1970 to 1972 and a research assistant at the Space Systems Research Laboratory.
Before embarking on his career path, Dr. Lee earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from National Cheng Kung University in 1968. He continued his studies at Duke University, where he obtained a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1972 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1974. Dr. Lee would subsequently supervise a total of 86 PhD students and 93 master's students over the course of his professional life.
Outside of his primary posts, Dr. Lee has contributed as a member of the board of directors for Delta Electronics from 2003 to 2017, Artesyn Embedded Technologies from 1997 to 2004 and Zytec Corporation from 1986 to 1997. Since 2002, he has maintained his involvement with the Delta Environment and Educational Foundation. A fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), he has also been affiliated with the IEEE Power Electronics Society, the National Academy of Engineering, the Society of Automotive Engineers, now known as SAE International, and Academia Sinica. With research interests in high-frequency power conversion, magnetics and EMI, distributed power systems, renewable energy, power quality, high-density electronics packaging and integration, and modeling and control, Dr. Lee currently holds 89 U.S. patents and has published 310 journal articles and 740 refereed technical papers.
As a testament to his myriad accomplishments in the field, Dr. Lee was presented with a Power Supply Technology Outstanding Achievement Award from the China Power Supply Society in 2018, an IEEE Medal in Power Engineering in 2015, the Ernst Blickle Prize from the SEW-Eurodrive Foundation in 2005, an Outstanding Alumni Award from National Chung Kung University in 2004, an Arthur E. Fury Award for Leadership and Innovation in 1998, a Dean's Award for Excellence in Research from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1997 and an IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Award in 1989. He has also been recognized for his numerous written works within the field, including Best Paper Awards at the International High Frequency Power Conversion Conference and the IEEE Power Electronics Specialist Conference. Looking toward the future, Dr. Lee intends to continue living in Blacksburg, VA, and stay involved in teaching and research in some capacity.
