Relocating to the United States soon thereafter, he served Green International, Inc., in Pennsylvania as a project engineer from 1969 to 1971 and The Chester Engineers as a senior engineer from 1971 to 1977. Between 1977 and 1979, he was a principal engineer for Schneider Engineers, and from 1979 until 1980, he was a senior engineer for Michael Baker Engineers.
Delving into academia in 1980, Dr. Shahalam served the Jordan University of Science and Technology as a professor for 11 years before transferring to the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, as a visiting professor from 1992 to 1996. Subsequently, he excelled as a researcher at the Ohio State University Research Center in 1997, holding the role for one year before advancing to become the head of the department of civil engineering at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman from 1998 to 2002. Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Shahalam has been a consultant for the Pittsburgh Wastewater Treatment Plant, coordinator of the graduate study program at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, and researcher at the KFUPM in Saudi Arabia. In addition, he was a member of Save the Environment in Jordan from 1988 to 1992 and has authored 160 research papers, which have been published in professional journals and conference proceedings. Furthermore, he has served as a reviewer for manuscripts in professional journals and is a patentee for a portable toilet system.
Drawing upon a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, a Master of Science in civil engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Master of Science in water resources from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Shahalam likewise holds a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental science from the University of Toledo and is a registered professional civil engineer in the State of Ohio. Notably, he is a life fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a specialist in water microbiology with the International Association for Water Quality.
