A native of Madras (now Chennai), Tamilnadu, India, Dr. Subramanian loved agriculture but ultimately chose healthcare to provide care to others due to his brother late Dr. Chandrasekar's influence. He finished Pediatrics and has now excelled in Neonatology serving as a director of nurseries and the chief of neonatology at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C. since 1981 and further progressing to the posts of vice chair of Pediatrics (1993-1999) and Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics-Gynecology between 1991 till present. Additionally, he has contributed as an attending neonatologist for the aforementioned institution since 1976. Prior to embarking upon his professional path, he pursued an education at University of Madras in India, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1964, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1969. He was an intern in Pediatrics at Jewish Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY from 1971 to 1972, where he got his exposure in the neonatal care unit, which was then an emerging field in Medicine. Then he did his Pediatric Residency at University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, MD. He then did his Fellowship training at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington DC. Dr. Subramanian is a certified diplomate in both the American Board of Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Other career-related endeavors to his credit include working with Georgetown University Medical Center as the co-chair for children's health and development in 2005-2006 and as Chair for the GUMC research committee between 2005 and 2010. An expert in the field of Neonatology, he has contributed as an editor to many publications, including "Trace Elements/Mineral Metabolism During Development," "SIDS Series," "Current Concepts in Neonatology" in the Indian Journal of Pediatrics. He was a member of the Fetus and Newborn Committee in Washington, D.C., as well as appointed to the mayoral committee to decrease infant mortality.
What shapes and drives him is his learnings from community service and work with non-profit organizations such as AIM for Seva, which was established in 2000 and provides free student homes (FSH) or chatralaya, schools and hospitals and have been making it possible for these children from rural and tribal areas to develop into healthy, self-confident, responsible citizens – fully prepared for career and life. Dr. Subramanian currently serves as coordinator in this DMV region. AIM for Seva's present focus is to provide free boarding, lodging, books, and coaching in curricular and extracurricular programs to poor rural and tribal students so that they may finish high school and attend college. It also provides health care through the 6 hospitals in rural areas.
Dr. Subramanian also co-founded Hindu American Community Services Inc., (HACSI) in 2009. Its mission is to provide community, charitable, educational and relief services to suffering Hindu Americans as well as all regardless of nationality or religion or status. HACSI members have cooked, raised funds and has served more than a million meals to the Homeless at the Central DC Kitchen from 2009 till now. Now HACSI is expanding this service to Virginia and Maryland as well. He was also a Board member of another not for profit organization Hindu American Seva Council (HASC) which focused on empowering women, younger generation and environmental causes. HASC also organized one and two-day conferences at the White House for several years for young adults, high school and college students for educating them in policies, politics, government, environment and career opportunities. Currently he is a Board member of EVERMORE an NGO organization established to help parents whose children died at any age. He also served as the Vice President of Evermore which is trying to change the policy at federal and state levels to provide for FMLA for those whose children of any age who died due to any cause.
Furthermore, Dr. Subramanian has been the co-founder of the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Lanham, MD and served as the Chairman of the Board for many years. He also co-founded the Council of Hindu Temples of North America (CHTNA) 1984, the United Hindu Jain Temples (UHJT) of Metropolitan Washington D.C. 1990, and the Hindu American Community Services, Inc (HACSI). He also served in the Board in the Washington region for the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine for many years. He also served as a Board Member in another NGO organization UPAKAR to provide scholarships to meritorious college students in USA.
Leading a successful career in his field, Dr. Subramanian has a number of achievements under his belt. These include in-depth research in neonatology, trace element kinetics, reduction in infant mortality, neonatal immunology, and bioethics. Dr. Subramanian served in the Institutional Review Board, Dean's Council on Bioethics, Chairman of Hospital Ethics Committee, Chairman of Pediatric Ethics Committee, Chair of GUMC Research Committee, and as a member in the Committee on Appointment and Promotion at GUMC. He is currently a Senior Ethicist at MGUH and a faculty in the Dr. Pellegrino Clinical Bioethics Center at GUMC and an associate at Kennedy Institute of Ethics. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Society on Neonatal Perinatal Medicine, and was a member of American College of Nutrition, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, the International Society for Trace Element research and the Society for Bioethics Consultation.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Dr. Subramanian enjoys participating in community services in his spare time. He has been a Board member, Vice President and presently Co Faith Leader at Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington DC. At the request of IFC he formed the United Hindu Jain Temples Association in 1990/91 and joined the Interfaith Council of metropolitan Washington DC. He has numerous presentations on Hinduism at various places of worship, schools and at various forums. He has written many articles on Hinduism related topics. He received the prestigious "Interfaith Bridge Builder Award" in 2006 for his consistent, untiring work to bring and build an understanding of all religions and build positive relationship among the various religions in the Metro area. He was invited to be a speaker at the Rally to End Racism in 2018 at Washington Mall along with other religious leaders. He was also awarded the "Interfaith Leadership Award" in 2019 by the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington DC at the 40th Annual IFC Concert at Washington Hebrew Congregation in DC, celebrating the 150th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He also received a "Lifetime Achievement Award" by American Diversity Group for helping in medical care of needy and socially disadvantaged groups in October 2019.
A testament to his success, Dr. Subramanian has been the recipient of the MAGIS Master Teacher Award, and the Clinical Teacher of Year Award as well as the Teacher of Year Award. Notably, he has featured in profiles published in such esteemed periodicals as Newsweek, the Washingtonian Journal and the Georgetown University Medical Center Web Magazine. He has appeared in many local and national TV and radio shows for his expertise.
