Mr. Schwarzer began his professional career by earning a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Villanova University in Pennsylvania in 1960. Following this accomplishment, he pursued further postgraduate study at Columbia University in New York between 1960 and 1962. With a preference for physically demanding work over desk work, Mr. Schwarzer utilized his education to focus his career on construction and civil engineering.

First working as a soils engineer for the Joseph S. Ward Co. in Caldwell, New Jersey, from 1961 to 1965, Mr. Schwarzer went on to become the district manager for the Resonant Pile Corp. in East Providence, Rhode Island, from 1965 to 1967. From 1967 to 1984, he served as the vice president of Franki Foundation Company in Boston, before transitioning to become the senior vice president of Berkel & Company Contractors Inc. in Atlanta. Mr. Schwarzer held this role until his retirement in 2008.

During his time with Berkel & Company, Mr. Schwarzer worked on a contract laying the foundation for the 1996 Olympic Stadium in Atlanta, work he names as a career highlight. Additionally, he is a registered professional engineer in the state of Massachusetts and a licensed general contractor in the state of Florida. In his retirement, Mr. Schwarzer is an avid golfer, and enjoys tennis, hiking, and woodworking.
