Ellen Dorinda Shelley, MD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Dermatology

Dr. Ellen Dorinda Shelley has contributed prolifically to professional journals, publishing more than 200 articles.

    GRAND RAPIDS, OH, November 12, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- E. Dorinda Shelley, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With over 45 years of academic experience, Dr. Shelley has enjoyed a legendary reputation as a professor of dermatology. Between 1983 and 1997 she excelled as a professor and the chief of dermatology at the Medical College of Ohio (MCO) and since then has been a clinical professor with the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (formerly MCO). She previously served as the chairman of dermatology and a professor with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria from 1979 to 1983. At the University of Illinois at Chicago, she held the roles of an assistant professor of dermatology from 1974 to 1975 and an associate professor from 1975 to 1978. Dr. Shelley began her career as an assistant professor of dermatology at Stanford University between 1971 and 1974. She additionally worked as a consultant for the Food and Drug Administration from 1974 to 1982.

Prior to starting her medical career, Dr. Shelley graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. She graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Missouri in 1966, and served an internship at Saint Luke's Hospital in Saint Louis from 1966 to 1967. Following her residency in dermatology at the University of Missouri from 1967 to 1970, Dr. Shelley became a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University between 1970 and 1971, and was certified in her profession by the American Board of Dermatology in 1971.

Dr. Shelley has contributed prolifically to professional journals, publishing more than 200 articles. She was also a coeditor of "A Community of Scholars: Recollections of the Early Years of the Medical College of Ohio" in 2011. She was the coauthor with her husband Walter. B. Shelley MD, PhD of "Consultations in Dermatology" in 2006, "Advanced Dermatological Therapy" in 1987 and 2001, "Advanced Dermatologic Diagnosis" in 1992, and "A Century of International Dermatological Congresses" in 1992. Dr. Shelley has also found success as the author of multiple children's books including "The Helium Table" and "the Helium Egg" in 2010, "Helium Heels" in 2014, "Santa's Sleigh-Train" in 2015, "Dasher and the Sleigh-Train" in 2019 and as co-author of "Toronto and Ned" in 2016. She also edited two art books with second editions: "Earl W. North, American Landscape Painter" in 2017 and "Bernadine Stetzel's Our Town" in 2018.

A member of the board of trustees for the Noah Worchester Dermatological Society between 2002 and 2005, Dr. Shelley was also the chairperson of the annual meeting evaluation committee for the American Academy of Dermatology from 1994 to 1999. In addition she held a number of roles with the Women's Dermatologic Society, including president in 1980, a member of the board of directors, and historian from 1996 to 2005. Further memberships include the American Dermatological Association, the Ohio Dermatological Association, and the Cosmos Club of Washington, D.C.

In honor of her myriad accomplishments, Dr. Shelley has been the recipient of accolades from the Women's Dermatologic Society, including the Rose Hirschler Award in 2007 and the Walter B. Shelley MD Leadership Award in 2012. She was also recognized as an honorary member of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2009. Besides her career, Dr. Shelley enjoys gardening, attending library sales and antique auctions, collecting art, and supervising her used bookstores.
