Dr. Thomas John Prendergast Jr. led a prolific career as a physician and epidemiologist for over 30 years.

Now retired, Dr. Prendergast led a prolific career as a physician and epidemiologist for over 30 years. Prior to the beginning of his prestigious career, he pursued a formal education at Washington University in Saint Louis, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1962 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1966. Subsequently, he completed an internship and a residency with Saint Luke's Hospital in Saint Louis between 1966 and 1967. Between 1968 and 1971, Dr. Prendergast completed service in the United States Army Reserve as a preventive medicine officer until receiving his honorable discharge, and an Army Commendation Medal. While serving in the U.S. Army as Chief of Preventive Medicine in the Frankfurt (West Germany) Medical Service Area, Dr. Prendergast hosted a radio broadcast: Frankfurt Medical Report – a five-minute program of special medical information for residents of the Frankfurt Medical Services Area.

Soon thereafter, Dr. Prendergast briefly worked as an associate with the Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, before joining the University of Missouri in Columbia, as an assistant professor from 1972 and 1977. During this time, he graduated with a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina in 1972. As he continued to progress through his career, he served in the roles of the director of epidemiology and disease control with the Orange County Health Care Agency and the deputy director for the Department of Public Health in San Bernardino County, California, between 1977 and 1993. While serving as deputy assistant director of the Health Care Agency in Orange County, Dr. Prendergast edited the Orange County Physicians Bulletin, which alerted local physicians to trends and issues of public health significance. Furthermore, Dr. Prendergast found success as a health officer and a director with the aforementioned organization until his retirement in 2004.


In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Prendergast contributed as an associate clinical professor at the University of California Medical Center in Irvine, California, for 13 years and taught public health and preventative medicine at Loma Linda University in 1990. He also excelled as a consultant for the Disease Control Committee for the California Conference of Local Health Officers. To remain aware of changes in the field, he maintains his affiliation with the American Public Health Association, the California Conference of Local Health Officers, the Health Officers Association of California, and the Southern California Public Health Association. Moreover, Dr. Prendergast is a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Prendergast was presented with the Community Service Award from the Vietnamese Cultural Society. He additionally accepted the Distinguished Service Award from the AIDS Response Program of Orange County. Likewise, Dr. Prendergast was celebrated with the Volunteer Service Recognition Award from the American Cancer Society.
