Claire Shaeffer has been a writer, teacher, and pattern designer for more than forty years. She first studied fashion design at Laney College (Oakland, CA) and graduated with honors in 1968. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and graduated summa cum laude from Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA) in 1974.
After she moved back to California in 1974, she taught a variety of fashion and clothing construction courses as a member of the adjunct faculty at College of the Desert (Palm Desert, CA). She retired from academia in 1997. In 2000, she developed the Custom Couture Collection for Vogue Patterns (owned by CSS Industries). The Custom Couture Collection focuses on high fashion design and haute couture techniques which home-sewers can duplicate.
Ms. Shaeffer is an internationally respected author and a columnist who focuses on introducing haute couture and ready-to-wear techniques to the home sewing market. She has contributed to numerous magazines in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom and is the author of more than 25 books and videos. Her first book --"The Complete Book of Sewing Shortcuts"—which was published in 1981 introduced new industry concepts and was in print until 2011. Her book "Couture Sewing Techniques" was first published in 1993 with a second edition in 2011; it is the only book to describe haute couture techniques. Other books include "Claire Shaeffer's Fabric Sewing Guide" in 1986, and "Sew Any Fabric" in 2003, the Couture Sewing series which focuses on designs in her personal collection. Ms. Shaeffer's latest book, "The Fine Art of Tailoring," is scheduled for release in 2020.
She is a member of Fashion Group International, the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals, the Costume Society of America, the International Textile and Apparel Association, and Vintage Fashion Guild.
.Honored with multiple awards throughout her career, Ms. Shaeffer is especially proud to have received the Professional Association of Custom Clothiers Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. Other honors have included being named to the American Sewing Guild Hall of Fame in 2011 and receiving multiple First, Second and Third Place Awards from the National Federation of Press Women and the California Press Women. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Shaeffer has been featured in the 25th and 26th editions of Who's Who in the West.
She has been active with the Assistance League of Palm Springs Desert Area as vice president and president and the Riverside County Heart Association. She served as president of the Navy Officer's Wives at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. In her free time, she actively collects vintage haute couture fashions and enjoys opera.
