Upon graduating from Seoul High School and having studied for one year at Seoul National University, he pursued further education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) earning a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemical engineering in 1967. Dr. Ryu began his career as a Senior Research Engineer at the Squibb Institute for Medical Research, Bristol-Myers Squibb in Princeton, New Jersey in 1967. He also served as an Adjunct Professor for the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, until 1972.
After having served briefly as an Associate Professor for the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Applied Biological Science at MIT, Dr. Ryu, served as one of the founding faculty members of the very first research university in Korea, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He served as Professor and Chairman of the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Biological Science and Engineering, from 1973 to 1982. Simultaneously, he served and contributed as a consultant and advisor to many industrial research laboratories, government organizations, and academic institutions in US, Japan, and Korea such as the United States National Academy of Science Research Associateship at the U.S. Army Natick Research Laboratory, NASA Ames Laboratory, and Distinguished Visiting Professorships at the Texas A & M, SUNY Buffalo, Osaka University, and Seoul National University. Thereafter, Professor Ryu joined the faculty of the College of Engineering as well as the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, and College of Biological Science at the University of California, Davis as the Maynard Amerine Endowed Chair Professor. There, he served as a faculty member in various capacities for 30 years before retirement.
