In a highlight-filled career, he recalls making an accidental observation of Neptune, seeing clouds in the atmosphere in 1975. A decade later, during the Voyager 2 mission, the clouds were seen again.

An acclaimed physicist, Dr. Joyce has excelled as a support scientist for Kitt Peak National Observatory since 1974. In this post, he has specialized in instrumentation development, late-type stars and infrared spectroscopy. Currently, he is participating with a new project called DESI, also known as Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, which will measure the effect of dark energy on the expansion of the universe via obtaining optical spectra for tens of millions of galaxies and quasars to construct a 3D map spanning the nearby universe to 11 billion light years. Previously, Dr. Joyce worked for the aforementioned observatory as an associate engineering physicist from 1973 until 1974.
Prior to these appointments, Dr. Joyce gained valuable expertise in the field as a research associate for the State University of New York at Stony Brook from 1970 to 1973 and as a research assistant with the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory from 1966 to 1970. In a career filled with professional highlights, he fondly recalls making an accidental observation of Neptune, seeing clouds in the atmosphere in 1975. A decade later, during the Voyager Z mission, the clouds were seen again. Additionally, Dr. Joyce has helped to develop a number of instruments that have been used by other researchers at the Kitt Peak National Observatory.
Before accepting his post at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Dr. Joyce earned a Bachelor of Arts from Williams College in1965. Subsequently, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California Berkeley in 1970. He retains his professional alignment with the American Physical Society, the American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in order to remain aware of changes in an evolving field. Due to his outstanding work, he has been honored many times and was notably featured in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Looking toward the future, Dr. Joyce intends to experience the continued success of his career and the DESI project.
