Born in Cuba and living under a communist regime, Dr. Salazar-Carrillo fled the country under persecution during his final term at the University of Havana Law School. He immigrated to the United States in 1960, having earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Miami Business School two years earlier. Driven by a fervent interest in how economies affect developed and underdeveloped nations, the resilient newcomer pursued advanced studies at the University of California Berkeley, obtaining a Master of Economics in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics in 1967. This distinguished Dr. Salazar-Carrillo as the second person in Cuban history to receive a PhD in his field.
Dr. Salazar-Carrillo joined the faculty of Florida International University in 1980, where he is active as a professor in the Department of Economics at the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs. He also served as the director of the institution's Research Centre on Economics. Prior to his affiliation with FIU, Dr. Salazar-Carrillo was a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and worked as a Professorial Lecturer at Georgetown University.

Throughout his nearly 50-year career, Dr. Salazar-Carrillo has excelled as a leader and demonstrated remarkable commitment to his field. He was elected as the president of the Florida chapter of the Caribbean Basin Institute and the first vice president of the Collegium of Cuban Economists. He has carried out duties as a member of the executive committees of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy and the National Association of Cuban-American Educators, and as director of the United Nations Development Program Mission in Rio de Janeiro.
Dr. Salazar-Carrillo's other affiliations include the National Association of Forensic Economics, the International Association for Energy Economics, the North America Economics and Finance Association, and the Econometric Society.
