Specializing in such areas as employment and labor law, litigation, employment litigation and commercial arbitration, contractual and partnership disputes and fashion, he hailed from Epstein, Becker and Green, P.C, for which he served as a partner for 27 years. Mr. Spelfogel also held appointments as partner and associate at four other firms across New York City, was an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board in Boston and New York City and an attorney in the Office of the Solicitor, U.S. Department of Labor, in Washington and Boston.
Outside of his commitments in the courtroom, Mr. Spelfogel is an adjunct professor of employment law at his alma mater, Columbia University. He has taught at several other institutions in the past, including Baruch College of the City College of New York, St. John's University and New York University. Widely published, he has authored, edited and published numerous articles, books chapters and books on topics such as wage and hour collective actions, comparable worth and pay equity, employment discrimination, wrongful discharge and retiree health care. Mr. Spelfogel more recently published articles in the New York State Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Journal in the spring of 2017, which was titled "The Enforceability of Class Action Waivers," and in the American Bar Association's Journal of labor & Employment Law in the winter of 2015, which was titled "Permissable Coordinated Actions by Employers in Labor Negotiations."
Before embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Spelfogel pursued an education at the prestigious Harvard University, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1956. He subsequently concluded his academic efforts in 1959, having attained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Columbia University. Mr. Spelfogel has since been admitted to practice by the Massachusetts and New York State Bars, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Ninth Circuits, the U.S. District Court for the Districts of Colorado, Massachusetts and Ohio, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Northern and Southern Districts of New York, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Spelfogel is an elected fellow of the New York State Bar Foundation and the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. Among other industry-related organizations, he is a member of the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association and the American Arbitration Association where he has served in numerous capacities. Mr. Spelfogel is notably a former Chairman of the New York State Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Section where he continues to serve on its Executive Committee and is active as a member of the Executive Committee of the Dispute Resolution Section.
In 2014, Mr. Spelfogel was the recipient of a Samuel M. Kaynard Award for Excellence in the Fields of Labor and Employment Law. Maintaining an AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell, he has also been recognized by the Best Lawyers in America in labor law and management every year since 1995, and been included in Super Lawyers' New York metro edition for employment and labor every year between 2006 and 2019. What's more, Mr. Spelfogel is a celebrated Marquis listee, and has been featured in approximately 60 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in American Law.
