A native of Budapest, Hungary, Mr. Halasi-Kun emigrated with his family as a child in 1944, by way of Turkey, arriving in the United States in 1952. He became a naturalized United States Citizen in 1961. Upon completing high school at Horace Mann Preparatory School in 1962 he continued his education at New York University earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management in 1966. Having completed the Reserve Officers Training Course (ROTC) while at New York University, he was commissioned as a 2nd LT in the United States Anny upon graduation. He served on active duty for two years serving 15 months in Vietnam. After completing active duty Mr. Halasi-Kun continued to serve in the active reserves until his retirement in 1994. Upon completing active duty in 1968 Mr. Halasi-Kun joined Saga Administration Corporation in Menlo Park, California as a Food Service Manager and Director until 1971.
In 1970 Mr. Halasi-Kun married Ms. Karen Cherubin, a marriage that lasted 46 years until her death.
In 1971 Mr. Halasi-Kun returned to school and earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in management from St. John's University in 1973. After receiving his MBA he continued his formal education at Columbia University until 1976 to enhance his knowledge of Organization Development. At the completion of his formal education at Columbia University he joined Consolidated Edison of New York City as an Organization Development Consultant.
While at Consolidated Edison from 1976 to 2003 he held various positions of increasing responsibility in Organization Development, Management Development, Performance Improvement and Employee Benefits. Throughout his career with Con Edison he participated in a variety of training programs and earned Certified Compensation Professional Designation in 1985. He was also an Executive on Loan to United Way of New York City and the New York City Police Department. He was also an Adjunct Professor for Adelphi University as part of their "Degree on Wheels" Program lecturing to prospective MBA candidates.
From 1968 to 1994 Mr. Halasi-Kun continued to participate in his military education as well to insure his career advancement in the US Army. He completed the Civil Affairs Advanced Course in 1973, the Civil Preparedness Course in 1973 and the Command General Staff College Course in 1978. He also participated in numerous shorter courses to enhance mission performance. His contributions during his 28 years of service were recognized with ribbons, medals and Letters of Appreciation. He received the Army Commendation Medal in 1982 and again in 1993 and the Meritorious Service Medal in 1994. He retired in 1994 as a Lieutenant Colonel (LTC). During his career, Mr. Halasi-Kun held numerous positions in civil affairs and special operation communities.
Mr. Halasi-Kun has and continues to be active in his community, New Milford, CT. Arriving in New Milford in 1954 he developed a lifelong love for the community. He has been and continues to be the Chairman of the New Milford Conservation Commission and the Sexton for the Upper Merryall Cemetery Association. He was the past president of Weantinogue Heritage Land Trust working with communities and individuals to preserve environmentally sensitive areas. He was also a long time member of the Appalachian Mountain Club maintaining trails as well as serving as an ambassador and guide to trail hikers. His contributions to the community were recognized in 1994 when he was designated as the Conservation Commissioner of The Year for Litchfield County and in 2018 when he received a Certificate of Recognition from New Milford for his long standing accomplishments on behalf of the Town.
Mr. Halasi-Kun is respected for his knowledge of the area's history and has recently published "Upper Merryall Cemetery-A Brief History" and will soon be releasing "The Tenth Lot of the North Purchase -The Unknown Right." He has published other works as well, not related to area history. Most notable is "Karen Halasi-Kun, A Life Partner -Her Story."
Mr. Halasi-Kun is a former member of the American Society for Training and Development, American Compensation Association and Appalachian Mountain Club. He continues to be an active member in the Civil Affairs Association and The Reserve Officers Association.
