He also co-founded the Caribbean/Latin American Action, which fosters trade and economic growth development in the Caribbean Basin. Previously, Mr. Blatchford served as the deputy undersecretary of commerce and the director of the Peace Corps.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Blatchford pursued an education at the University of California Los Angeles, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1956. He continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of California Berkeley in 1961. Following these accomplishments, Mr. Blatchford received honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Seton Hall University and Chapman College in 1969, Kenyon College in 1970 and Westminster College and Fairfield University in 1972, respectively.
Passionate about confronting issues of poverty in developing countries, Mr. Blatchford was active in helping negotiate and obtain passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Caribbean Basin Initiative and the Andean Trade Preference. An international trade lawyer and lobbyist at the Livingston Group, he worked as an assistant at the United States Court of International Trade in 1981, a lecturer at the Inter-American Defense College in 1978 and a consultant on Latin American policy for the Institute of Strategic and International Studies at Georgetown University in 1969. Moreover, he provided his expertise to Bank of America as a special consultant on social policy from 1973 to 1974, the Committee for the Caribbean as a trustee from 1978 to 1979 and the United States House Committee on Education and Labor as a legal assistant from 1957 to 1958. An experienced consultant, Mr. Blatchford helps clients develop communications strategies that will carry their message to media outlets, the United States Congress, the executive branch, academia, as well as leading American businesses.
Over the years, Mr. Blatchford has been affiliated with several professional organizations, including the Latin American Institute Heritage Foundation, the People to People Foundation, the Institute of International Education and the American Enterprise Institute. A member of the Committee on National Security and International Affairs and the Commission of California, he was involved with the Cabinet Committee on the Aging, the United States-Mexican Studies Center, the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies and the National Center for Victims of Crime. As a testament to his success and longevity in the field, he was presented with the Honor Award of the Year from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1969. Additionally, Mr. Blatchford was previously highlighted in multiple editions of Who's Who in American Law.
Beyond his impressive commitments within his career, Mr. Blatchford served as the captain of the National Championship Tennis Team at the University of California Los Angeles in 1956. A skilled tennis player, he competed at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship in 1956. In his free time, he also enjoys musicals, classical music and opera. Married to his wife, Winifred A. Marich, since 1967, Mr. Blatchford is the proud father to three children: Andrea Nichole, Nicholas George and Antonia Nason.
